The Dearborn Center for Math, Science and Technology in Dearborn, Michigan, is a half-day program for a select group of students from three Dearborn high schools. Students have split up into groups to work on projects. For a project, students are entering the Internet Science and Technology Fair. For more information go to http://istf.ucf.edu online. Their project discusses better ways to test nuclear weapons, using computer-simulated testing. Because of the many hazardous affects of atmospheric and underground nuclear testing and because the United States is currently not allowed to physically test nuclear weapons, they want to develop a better computer software specifically designed to compute the many variables of a nuclear blast. The nuclear blasts include atmospheric and underground simulations. The students have researched this topic extensively and will post it on a website. It will be judged on content and format guidelines. They are looking for a technical advisor to consult for the specifics of this project. The technical advisor has to be someone who is qualified in computers and nuclear weapons testing. The students are hoping someone would be willing to help them for the duration of this project. This would involve weekly exchange of electronic mail and you giving expert advice to contribute to the project. Please contact Linda Anderman of Community Relations at 5-9196 or write to anderman@lanl.gov by electronic mail. For more information or the students directly, write to pres2006@yahoo.com by electronic mail.
