Crews from SCIENTECH Inc. begin demolishing the 220 High Explosives Complex at Technical Area 16. Photo by Patricia Leyba, Risk Reduction and Environmental Stewardship (RRES-DO) Demolition underway of buildings at Technical Area 16Crews from SCIENTECH Inc. last week began demolishing buildings as part of a large-scale project to deactivate and decommission the 220 High Explosives Complex at Technical Area 16.The complex spans some 23 acres and includes eight buildings, seven of which were constructed during the early 1950s. A steam boiler was added to the complex in the early 1990s to replace steam generation that previously had been provided by the Laboratory's main steam plant. The total area of the facility is approximately 51,500 square feet. During the complex's heyday, scientists used X-rays to determine key properties of the explosives tested there. The complex was designed like a wheel hub and spokes to accommodate radiographic processes; earthen berms within the complex protected workers against accidental explosions. The demolition work at the complex is being conducted to reduce surveillance and maintenance costs associated with excess facilities. The demolition and removal of the complex also will reduce any risks of environmental pollution due to residue from high explosives materials or other chemicals. Funding for the project comes from the Laboratory's Facility and Infrastructure Revitalization Program. Gilbert Montoya and Dan Broughton of Solid Waste Operations (FWO-SWO) are leading the demolition project. --James E. Rickman Other Headlines New theory unravels magnetic instability more...
