General SEPG meeting on Wednesday

The Information Architecture Software Engineering Process Group is a group of software engineering specialists who facilitate the definition, maintenance and improvement of the Laboratory software processes. Members assess current status and develop standards, tools, templates and processes to facilitate improvement in Laboratory practices. The IA SEPG guidance helps transfer the technology throughout the Laboratory and to the public.

The mission is to build a software engineering and quality engineering infrastructure that will promote and leverage current state-of-the-art best practices. They develop Laboratory standards, tools and processes to provide a higher degree of confidence and credibility in the software they produce.

Wellness Center class

Abstracts due for next SQuINT workshop

The deadline to submit abstracts for the fifth annual Southwest Quantum Information and Technology Network (SQuInT) workshop is today.

The workshop is scheduled for Feb. 7-9, 2003 in La Fonda Hotel in downtown Santa Fe.

Community input sought on new arts and humanities program at Los Alamos YMCA

The Los Alamos Family YMCA is seeking input on programs to be included in its proposed new arts and humanities department. The Los Alamos Family YMCA is a Laboratory sanctioned organization.

The Family YMCA plans to work with Los Alamos Public Schools, Los Alamos Arts Council, University of New Mexico, Los Alamos and other interested agencies to expand arts and humanities programs and offerings in Los Alamos and Northern New Mexico.

The YMCA also is seeking individuals to serve on a committee developing the new program. The YMCA's Arts and Humanities Advisory Committee will hold its inaugural meeting from 5:30 to 7 this evening in Mesa Public Library on Central Avenue downtown.

The Los Alamos Family YMCA is located at 1450 Iris St. downtown.

Sangre de Cristo Chorale concert season in December

The 40-voice Sangre de Cristo Chorale, a Laboratory sanctioned organization, under the direction of Sheldon Kalberg and accompanied by Cindy Little, will open its 25th anniversary concert season with Silver Bells, traditional Christmas concerts in Santa Fe and Los Alamos.

These concerts will present classic masterpieces and traditional holiday favorites, including works by Rutter, Huff, Berlin, Fissinger and others, and featuring Ottorini Respighi's Laud to the Nativitywith chamber wind ensemble. The concerts will also feature the world premiere of a Christmas work by Bradley Ellingboe, dedicated to Sheldon Kalberg and the Chorale's 25th anniversary season.

The performances are at 2:30 p.m., Dec. 8, at the Santa Maria de la Paz Catholic Church in Santa Fe and 7:30 p.m., Dec. 14, at the United Church in Los Alamos. Tickets are available at $15 for regular admission and $10 for senior citizens and will be available at the door.

The Chorale also offers a catered Christmas Dinner concert at 7 p.m. on Dec. 15 at the La Fonda Hotel in Santa Fe with festive Holiday repertoire. Advance reservations are required, and reserved seating will be provided. Dinner concert reservations are $60 regular admission or $50 for senior citizens and students.

Fellowships available through American Institute of Physics

The American Institute of Physics is accepting applications for fellowships from scientists with doctoral degrees in physics or a related field and an interest in national or foreign policy.

Through the fellowship programs, doctoral scientists spend a year working in a congressional office or at the State Department to contribute much-needed scientific expertise to the federal government, according to the institute.

Scientists can apply for either the Science Fellowship program or the Congressional Science Fellowship program. Applicants must be United States citizens and a member of one of the 10 American Institute of Physics member societies. Applications should be submitted to the institute by Jan. 15, 2003.

NNMC/ARMA collecting books, other items

The Northern New Mexico Chapter of the Association of Records Managers and Administrators (NNMC/ARMA) is collecting new and used children's books to give to needy children for Christmas. The NNMC/ARMA is promoting reading this Christmas and will provide baskets of books to children who reside in foster homes, shelters or who are confined to hospitals in the Española, Los Alamos and Santa Fe areas.

The NNMC/ARMA is also collecting items (shampoos, conditioners, lotions, etc.) that people tend to bring home from hotels when on travel or vacation and are donating these items to area Homeless Shelters on an on-going basis.

Employees leaving Lab must attend termination presentation

Employees who are leaving the Laboratory or changing to casual status must attend a benefits termination presentation held by Benefits (HR-B).

The termination presentations are held every Laboratory pay day for University of California Lab employees. Employees who are retiring aren't required to attend a presentation, but rather, they should schedule a meeting with their designated benefits specialist.

The presentations begin at 8:30 a.m. in room P280 on the second floor of the Otowi Building at Technical Area 3. Pre-registration is required. Employees should register on line at http://www.lanl.gov/internal/training/training.html one to two weeks prior to their last scheduled work day to sign up for a benefits termination presentation.

Employees also must obtain a departure processing form from Staffing (HR-S) before the presentation. This form is available at http://www.hr.lanl.gov/hrstaffing/Terminations/index.stm online.

At the presentation, employees will receive a packet of information about their benefits and savings balances. They will learn about options to continue or convert insurance plans and distribution options for savings funds.

Employees who require a sign language interpreter should write to benefits@lanl.gov by e-mail three days in advance of the presentation they plan to attend. Or call the benefits office at 5-3842 (TDD).

Because of limited parking, employees should plan to arrive early and/or make alternative transportation arrangements, such as using Johnson Controls Northern New Mexico's ride service.
