Westbound lanes of Trinity Drive to close for gas line replacement

Beginning Sunday, both westbound lanes of Trinity Drive from roughly the Trinity-Central Avenue "Y" west to Oppenheimer Drive will be closed to vehicle traffic as work continues on a gas line replacement project.

Los Alamos County began the natural gas line replacement project on Trinity Drive last month. The work is scheduled to be completed in mid-December, weather permitting.

Julie Williams of the county Utilities Department said the closure of both lanes of westbound Trinity Drive is necessary to allow the general contractor sufficient room to replace the natural gas line.

K.R. Swerdferger Construction Co. is the general contractor for the project. Williams said the 50-year-old steel pipe is corroded and in the last year has had several leaks. Temporary repairs were made to the line in anticipation of its replacement.

The contractor will replace it with 3,200 feet of an 8-inch line made of a more durable polyethylene material to eliminate hazards resulting from continued corrosion. In addition, the county will place conduits for future electric and fiber optic lines, Williams said.

Williams said westbound traffic will be moved to the center eastbound lane of Trinity Drive for the duration of the project. Signs and other traffic control devices will be in place to divert motorists to one of the eastbound lanes of Trinity Drive.
