Ceremony returns land to San Ildefonso Pueblo

San Ildefonso Pueblo Governor John Gonzales, right, shakes hands with Ralph Erickson, left, manager of the Office of Los Alamos Site Operations during a transfer ceremony last Friday at San Ildefonso Pueblo. Gonzales is holding a key symbolic of the transfer of about 2,100 acres of land to the nearby pueblo that was previously used for Laboratory/Department of Energy operations. Next to Erickson is Dennis Martinez, OLASO deputy manager, and former San Ildefonso Pueblo Gov. Perry Martinez. The land is located at Technical Area 74 near the "White Rock Y" at the intersection of NM 502 and NM 4. "It is a very historic day for San Ildefonso Pueblo. This transfer is regarded as a return of ancestral home lands to San Ildefonso Pueblo," said Gonzales. Photo by LeRoy N. Sanchez, Public Affairs
