Wellness Center classes

Healthy Start: Before and During Pregnancy, noon to 1 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 30 and Nov. 6. This two session class is geared toward women and couples planning a pregnancy, or women in the early months of pregnancy. Topics include physical and emotional adjustments, nutrition, safe and fun exercise, etc. Taught by HSR-2 staff.

Stress Proofing, 8 a.m. to noon, Thursday, Oct. 31. Treat yourself to a half-day away from stress. Includes relaxation techniques, humorobics, thinking your way through stress and much more. Co-facilitated by the Employee Assistance Program and the Wellness Center.

Volunteer opportunities

San Felipe Pueblo Elementary School is seeking volunteer judges for their annual Science and Engineering Fair
The fair is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., Nov. 20. Prior experience in judging science projects is not necessary. Knowledge in the areas of science, math, engineering or technology will help in judging of projects. Lunch will be provided to participants.

The school is located about half way between Santa Fe and Albuquerque, off Interstate 25. Take the Algodones exit, go west to the first stop sign. Make a right turn and drive approximately three miles north until you come to an intersection. Go to your left and the school will be on your immediate right.

Judges needed for Speech Tournament on Nov. 8 and 9
The Hilltalkers, the Los Alamos High School Speech and Debate team, will be hosting the annual Los Alamos Invitational Speech Tournament on Nov. 8 and 9. They need volunteers to judge debates, orations, informative speeches, extemp speeches and interpretations of literature and expect over 300 contestants from around the state.

Competition will begin at 4 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 8, and end at 9:30 p.m. On Saturday, Nov. 9, it will begin at 8 a.m. and finish by 5:30 p.m. They ask that judges report 15 minutes before the round is scheduled to begin. Pparticipation for one or more rounds will be greatly appreciated. Food will be provided.

To be a speech judge, you need only to be a courteous and critical listener with interest in current events and/or literature. If you feel you are not qualified to judge or wish to learn more about the various events, you may wish to attend a judge's workshop at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 6, or Thursday, Nov. 7, in the Los Alamos High School Speech Theater.

Just-In-Time recruiting event today at Research Park

Staffing (HR-S) is interviewing 20 early career candidates with degrees in material science, computer science, electrical and mechanical engineering, physics and others fields today and Thursday. These candidates have been pre-selected by Laboratory technical recruiters.

ARMA Fall seminar on Nov. 19

The Northern New Mexico Chapter of ARMA is holding their Fall seminar on Nov. 19 at the Traditions Festival Marketplace, 601 W. Frontage Road, Algodones, NM. The speaker is a well-known presenter, John Phillips. This seminar will include two sessions: morning session will be on Electronic Records and afternoon session will be on Disaster Preparedness.

Cost for early registration, if paid by Nov. 8, is $125 for ARMA members and $175 for non members. Late registration - -after Nov. 8 - -is $175 for ARMA members and $225 for non-members. No cancellations and no refunds but substitutions will be allowed.

JIT news

Procurement (BUS-5) regretfully announces that effective immediately CJ Enterprises will no longer be furnishing the Laboratory with computer monitors, software and computer accessories under its JIT and local vendor agreements.

Arrangements for interim sources for these items are currently being made. BUS-5 will update the Newsbulletin and the Lab JIT web page with alternative source information within a few days.

YMCA registering participants for Red Ribbon basketball tournament

The Los Alamos Family YMCA, a Laboratory sanctioned organization, is registering youths and adults for its Red Ribbon three-on-three basketball tournament Oct. 27. The tournament emphasizes participation in healthy, recreational activities and a drug free lifestyle.

The tournament has divisions for females and males and a number of age categories for youths and adults. Preregistration is $10 a person through Oct. 25 and $15 on Oct. 26 and 27. The first 100 persons to register for the tournament also receive a T-shirt.

Employees leaving Lab must attend termination presentation

Employees who are leaving the Laboratory or changing to casual status must attend a benefits termination presentation held by Compensation and Benefits (HR-1).

The termination presentations are held every Laboratory pay day for University of California Lab employees. Employees who are retiring aren't required to attend a presentation, but rather, they should schedule a meeting with their designated benefits specialist.

The presentations begin at 8:30 a.m. in room P280 on the second floor of the Otowi Building at Technical Area 3. Pre-registration is required. Employees should register on line at http://www.lanl.gov/internal/training/training.html one to two weeks prior to their last scheduled work day to sign up for a benefits termination presentation.

Employees also must obtain a departure processing form from HR-Staffing (HR-5) before the presentation. This form is available at http://www.hr.lanl.gov/hrstaffing/Terminations/index.stm online.

At the presentation, employees will receive a packet of information about their benefits and savings balances. They will learn about options to continue or convert insurance plans and distribution options for savings funds.

Employees who require a sign language interpreter should write to benefits@lanl.gov by e-mail three days in advance of the presentation they plan to attend. Or call the benefits office at 5-3842 (TDD).

Because of limited parking, employees should plan to arrive early and/or make alternative transportation arrangements, such as using Johnson Controls Northern New Mexico's ride service.
