Just-In-Time recruiting event Oct. 23-24 at Research Park

Staffing (HR-S) is interviewing 20 early career candidates with degrees in material science, computer science, electrical and mechanical engineering, physics and others fields on Oct. 23-24. These candidates have been pre-selected by Laboratory technical recruiters.

The interviews are from 1 to 5 p.m., Oct. 23 and 8 a.m. to noon the next day in Room 203 at the Los Alamos Research Park on West Jemez Road across from Technical Area 3.

Kiwanis Pancake Breakfast on Saturday

The Kiwanis Club of Los Alamos, a Laboratory sanctioned organization, will host an all-you-can-eat Pancake Breakfast from 7 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Oct. 19. Pancakes, ham, juice, milk and coffee will be served. The breakfast is at the Betty Ehart Senior Center. Tickets are $6 for adults, $5 for seniors age 62 and $4 for children under age 12.

The proceeds from the breakfast will be used to support Los Alamos County youth programs. Kiwanis is a non-profit organization of men and women supporting the children of the world and their families.

ARMA Fall seminar on Nov. 19

The Northern New Mexico Chapter of ARMA is holding their Fall seminar on Nov. 19 at the Traditions Festival Marketplace, 601 W. Frontage Road, Algodones, NM. The speaker is a well-known presenter, John Phillips. This seminar will include two sessions: morning session will be on Electronic Records and afternoon session will be on Disaster Preparedness.

Cost for early registration, if paid by Nov. 8, is $125 for ARMA members and $175 for non members. Late registration - -after Nov. 8 - -is $175 for ARMA members and $225 for non-members. No cancellations and no refunds but substitutions will be allowed.

JIT news

Procurement (BUS-5) regretfully announces that effective immediately CJ Enterprises will no longer be furnishing the Laboratory with computer monitors, software and computer accessories under its JIT and local vendor agreements.

Arrangements for interim sources for these items are currently being made. BUS-5 will update the Newsbulletin and the LANL JIT web page with alternative source information within a few days.

Family Strengths Network news

  • Parents and Teens Support Group - Preteens to Teens: the Transition years. Speakers: Kelly Myers, Los Alamos Middle School Teacher, Bonnie Lissoway, LAMS Nurse, and Linda Valenti, School Social Worker, at 7 p.m. on Oct. 15
  • Parents and Toddlers support Group - 10:30 a.m. to noon, Oct. 16
  • Pumpkins Craft for children - 10:30 a.m. to noon, Oct. 16
  • Parents and Infants support group - 10:30 a.m. to noon, Oct. 17
  • Making Parenting a Pleasure - The program is designed to build on family strengths and to help parents develop a strong support network. The program will cover 13 topics over eight months. Plan to attend one, a few or all. Cost is $5 per session or $30 for the entire class. A light meal will be served and childcare is available for those who pre-register. Opening program - "Taking Care of Ourselves" from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Oct. 17.

YMCA registering participants for Red Ribbon basketball tournament

The Los Alamos Family YMCA, a Laboratory sanctioned organization, is registering youths and adults for its Red Ribbon three-on-three basketball tournament Oct. 27. The tournament emphasizes participation in healthy, recreational activities and a drug free lifestyle.

The tournament has divisions for females and males and a number of age categories for youths and adults. Preregistration is $10 a person through Oct. 25 and $15 on Oct. 26 and 27. The first 100 persons to register for the tournament also receive a T-shirt.

Hispanic Heritage Month salsa contest on Oct. 15

Show your culinary expertise and win a $50 gift certificate by entering your favorite homemade salsa. The contest is limited to the first 30 people who sign up. The Lab's three Diversity Champions or their representatives will be the judges. Entries will be judged for hottest, most original, tastiest and best looking. Judging will be finished before noon so the salsas can be served to everyone attending the Oct. 15 Hispanic Heritage Month Closing Ceremonies.

The closing ceremonies will be from noon to 1 p.m. in the Physics Auditorium. The event will feature Roberto Mondragon, former New Mexico lieutenant governor and now a leader of "Aspectos Culturales," an organization that provides bilingual materials and educational opportunities for students in New Mexico. Mondragon will speak and play the guitar.

Wellness Center offers Breast Health and Self Care class

In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the Wellness Center is offering a new class: Breast Health and Self Care. This one hour class will be offered from noon to 1p.m., Oct. 22, in Wellness Center Room 106. Class includes a review of current recommendations/controversies and discussion of screening examinations, along with dietary and exercise strategies for breast health and cancer prevention. Team-taught by Occupational Medicine and Wellness Center staff.

Health Promotion classes are open to the entire Laboratory work force. No fee, but pre-registration is required at

Ski conditioning class begins Oct. 21

Get ready for the slopes. The Wellness Center will offer an evening ski conditioning class. The class will meet from 6:45 - 7:30 p.m., Monday and Wednesday, beginning on Oct. 21. Progress from general muscle conditioning to ski specific exercises with extensive core training. If you haven't been a Wellness Center user recently, you may need a bike test to enter this advanced level III class. Bike tests will be scheduled afternoons this week--Wednesday through Friday.

Feldenkrais Method class offered at Los Alamos Family YMCA

The Los Alamos Family YMCA, a Laboratory sanctioned organization, is accepting registrations for its Feldenkrais Method class. Feldenkrais Method consists of gentle, verbally guided exercises for joint and muscle groups in the body. Karen Larsson of Santa Fe is the course instructor.

The class meets from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. on Wednesdays beginning Oct. 16. The registration fee is $19 for YMCA members, $26 for nonmembers.

Learning@lanl sponsors presentation on Oct. 16

Learning@lanl is sponsoring a special presentation, “Igniting Passion for Your Work,” from 8 a.m. to noon on Oct. 16. The presentation will explore techniques for increasing occupational intimacy and discovering passionate work for yourself and your team.

LabVIEW courses coming to Los Alamos in October

Learn how to use LabVIEW quickly, learn how the IEEE-488 (GPIB) and RS-232 actually work and how to work them and learn how to use LabVIEW with the IEEE-488 and RS-232 quickly and correctly. Class dates are Oct. 22 - 24.

Learn more about the LabVIEW Intermediate Level Jump-Start capabilities on Oct. 28 - 30. Classes will be at the Holiday Inn Express in Los Alamos. Fee for each class is $1,200.

Breakfast Buddies program needs volunteers

Breakfast Buddies for elementary age students are needed for academic school year 2002/2003 in Española at the following schools: Alcalde, Chimayo, Dixon, Española, Fairview, Sombrillo and McCurdy. Beginning Sept. 2002, adult Breakfast Buddies need to be available from approximately 8 to 9 a.m., one morning each week for two semesters (total of 25-30 mentoring sessions) to meet with the "lil" Breakfast Buddy.

Española tae kwan do class for youths offered through Los Alamos Family YMCA

The Los Alamos Family YMCA, a Laboratory-sanctioned organization, is offering a tae kwan do class for youths age 8 and younger. The class will be taught at the Lucero Center, 404 Paseo de Oñate in Española. The class meets from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Monday and Wednesday.

Participants should register with the instructor at the gym.

Next Leadership Institute is Oct. 20-27

Nominations being accepted

Applications are now being accepted for the Oct. 20-27 Leadership Institute. The institute features a series of learning experiences focused on the "being" aspects of organizational work, according to Harry Thomas of Training and Development (HR-6). It is structured for managers who want to improve their personal effectiveness as leaders.

Participation is by nomination and is open to senior technical staff members and anyone who supervises the work of others. Employees leaving Lab must attend termination presentation

Employees who are leaving the Laboratory or changing to casual status must attend a benefits termination presentation held by Compensation and Benefits (HR-1).

The termination presentations are held every Laboratory pay day for University of California Lab employees. Employees who are retiring aren't required to attend a presentation, but rather, they should schedule a meeting with their designated benefits specialist.

The presentations begin at 8:30 a.m. in room P280 on the second floor of the Otowi Building at Technical Area 3. Pre-registration is required. Employees should register on line at http://www.lanl.gov/internal/training/training.html one to two weeks prior to their last scheduled work day to sign up for a benefits termination presentation.

Employees also must obtain a departure processing form from HR-Staffing (HR-5) before the presentation. This form is available at http://www.hr.lanl.gov/hrstaffing/Terminations/index.stm online.

At the presentation, employees will receive a packet of information about their benefits and savings balances. They will learn about options to continue or convert insurance plans and distribution options for savings funds.

Employees who require a sign language interpreter should write to benefits@lanl.gov by e-mail three days in advance of the presentation they plan to attend. Or call the benefits office at 5-3842 (TDD).

Because of limited parking, employees should plan to arrive early and/or make alternative transportation arrangements, such as using Johnson Controls Northern New Mexico's ride service.
