The Los Alamos Family YMCA, a Laboratory sanctioned organization, is registering youths and adults for its Red Ribbon three-on-three basketball tournament Oct. 27. The tournament emphasizes participation in healthy, recreational activities and a drug free lifestyle. The tournament has divisions for females and males and a number of age categories for youths and adults. Preregistration is $10 a person through Oct. 25 and $15 on Oct. 26 and 27. Updated 10/9/02 Annual Ski Swap to be held Oct. 12 Skiers, snowborders, snow-shoers, mountaineers take note. It's time to get ready for winter. The annual Los Alamos Ski Swap will take place from 1 to 4 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 12, at the Los Alamos Middle School gym. In addition to used equipment and clothing, deeply discounted new gear will be brought in by vendors from New Mexico, Arizona, and Colorado. Sellers may drop equipment off between 7 and 11 a.m. You may donate your proceeds to Los Alamos Ski Racing Club or pick up your money or unsold equipment from 1 to 4 p.m. on Sunday. All proceeds benefit the LASRC. Volunteers are needed to help during and after the sale and to clear out the gym on Sunday. The LASRC is a Laboratory sanctioned not-for-profit organization that offers competitive ski racing, instruction and training for skiers between the ages of 7 and 18. The goal is to provide competitive alpine ski training for young athletes and to make the experience enjoyable. Races are designed to introduce young athletes to ski racing by letting each racer compete with his or her own age group in a low-stress environment. We also offer a more competitive program of training to compete in southwest regional ski races sponsored by the Rocky Mountain Division of the United States Ski Association. Entry deadline is Friday, Oct. 11. The contest is limited to the first 30 people who sign up. The Lab's three Diversity Champions or their representatives will be the judges. Entries will be judged for hottest, most original, tastiest and best looking. Judging will be finished before noon so the salsas can be served to everyone attending the Oct. 15 Hispanic Heritage Month Closing Ceremonies. The closing ceremonies will be from noon to 1 p.m. in the Physics Auditorium. The event will feature Roberto Mondragon, former New Mexico lieutenant governor and now a leader of "Aspectos Culturales," an organization that provides bilingual materials and educational opportunities for students in New Mexico. This one hour class will be offered from noon to 1p.m., Oct. 10 and Oct. 22, in Wellness Center Room 106. Class includes a review of current recommendations/controversies and discussion of screening examinations, along with dietary and exercise strategies for breast health and cancer prevention. Team-taught by Occupational Medicine and Wellness Center staff. Health Promotion classes are open to the entire Laboratory work force.

The Wellness Center will offer an evening ski conditioning class. The class will meet from 6:45 - 7:30 p.m., Monday and Wednesday, beginning on Oct. 21. Progress from general muscle conditioning to ski specific exercises with extensive core training. If you haven't been a Wellness Center user recently, you may need a bike test to enter this advanced level III class. Bike tests will be scheduled afternoons this week--Wednesday through Friday. The institute features a series of learning experiences focused on the "being" aspects of organizational work, according to Harry Thomas of Training and Development (HR-6). It is structured for managers who want to improve their personal effectiveness as leaders. Updated 8/6/02 Employees leaving Lab must attend termination presentation Employees who are leaving the Laboratory or changing to casual status must attend a benefits termination presentation held by Compensation and Benefits (HR-1). The termination presentations are held every Laboratory pay day for University of California Lab employees. Employees who are retiring aren't required to attend a presentation, but rather, they should schedule a meeting with their designated benefits specialist. The presentations begin at 8:30 a.m. in room P280 on the second floor of the Otowi Building at Technical Area 3. Pre-registration is required. Employees should register on line at http://www.lanl.gov/internal/training/training.html one to two weeks prior to their last scheduled work day to sign up for a benefits termination presentation. Employees also must obtain a departure processing form from HR-Staffing (HR-5) before the presentation. This form is available at http://www.hr.lanl.gov/hrstaffing/Terminations/index.stm online. At the presentation, employees will receive a packet of information about their benefits and savings balances. They will learn about options to continue or convert insurance plans and distribution options for savings funds.
