Editor's Note: On Tuesday's in October the Daily Newsbulletin will publish an article focusing on a aspect of property management to coincide with Property Awareness Month at the Laboratory. In addition, Laboratory personnel can register to win a $100 gift certificate at the Property Management Web page. Save money by re-using excess propertyEvery year, the Laboratory generates a substantial quantity of excess property, much of which is in serviceable condition. Laboratory workers can save money by re-utilizing excess property whenever possible. There are three ways to obtain excess property
Before excess property in good condition is picked up and carried away, it is listed on the Laboratory Swap Shop Web page where workers can browse a daily listing to find property they need. "The Swap Shop is a great opportunity for folks to avoid the cost of buying new equipment and save money for their group," said Allen Wallace of Property Management (BUS-6). "Why pay retail if you can get what you need for free?" To make it easier for Laboratory workers to browse the Swap Shop, the data is now posted on an open page in the Laboratory "blue" network partition. Previously, access was limited to Lab personnel with token cards and authorization to enter the Laboratory's administrative network. "Our internal customers let us know that students, contractors and others without token cards need to access the Swap Shop too, so we made the data available to the entire Laboratory," said Wallace. The Swap Shop can be found at http://businternal.lanl.gov/bus6/swap.htm online. The Johnson Controls Northern New Mexico Warehouse Excess property not selected for re-use in the Swap Shop is stored temporarily at the Johnson Controls Northern New Mexico warehouse, at Technical Area 60, building 2. Laboratory workers can check in at the service counter and browse through the available property. This is a good place to find serviceable computers, printers, monitors, scanners, cables and miscellaneous Lab equipment, Wallace said. Call the service counter at 7-2109 for more information.
All federal agencies and designated contractors must make their serviceable, high-value excess property available to other agencies. Everything from exotic metal alloys to heavy equipment to hard-to-find laboratory apparatus becomes available monthly. Property selected for transfer from another federal agency is available for transfer to the Laboratory at no cost except for shipping and handling. Do you have a wish list? Write to BUS-6 at lanlproperty@lanl.gov by electronic mail or call the Property Help Line at 5-3230. BUS-6 will conduct a search at federal sites across the country and around the world. -- Steve Sandoval Other Headlines Lab divisions hosting fundraising events for United Way campaign more...
