Study Center roofing project begins this week

The J. Robert Oppenheimer Study Center at Technical Area 3 is being re-roofed starting this week. The work is expected to take about 45 days to complete, weather permitting, and parking around the facility shouldn't be greatly impacted.

Work will begin once the general contractor has met all safety and security requirements, according to Charles Harviar of Construction and Facility Services (FWO-CFS). Harviar is the construction project manager on the Study Center job.

The general contractor on the $480,000 project is Aduddell Roofing and Sheet Metal Inc., of Moore, Okla. The Study Center was built in 1977.

Over the years, areas of the roof have been patched, but the entire 20,000-square-foot roof has never been replaced. Also as part of this work, the deck on the outdoor patio on the north side of the Study Center will be resurfaced.

Regular activities in the Study Center shouldn't be affected by the work, according to Helen Boorman of the Research Library (STB-RL). However some Lab workers who use or walk near the facility might be sensitive to smells from the tar pots. In addition, about 10 parking spaces north of the Study Center near University House will be used by the contractor for materials and parking, said Aleene Jenkins of Site Project Planning (PM-1). This area will be cordoned off for the duration of the project.
