Latest issue of Los Alamos NewsLetter is being distributed

The current issue of the Los Alamos NewsLetter, dated the week of Sept. 30, is scheduled to be in mailboxes and newsstands today.

In the cover story, Laboratory Director John Browne announces five new Laboratory Fellows. Read about those honored for their work; only 2 percent of the Lab's current technical staff members can hold this title at any given time.

The 2003 fiscal year salary increase authorization allotments are covered in "From the Top" in a master management memo from Richard Marquez, Los Alamos' associate director of administration. Marquez delinates the percentages and process used in arriving at this year's salary increase authorizations.

"Strong Homefront ... Stronger Nation!" is the theme of this year's United Way giving campaign and information about it and a new way to give via the internet are outlined on Page 3. Also on this page is an announcement of a new Lab organization: the Homeland Security Center that will serve as the primary point of contact for external customers.

Results of the recent health care survey as well as information about adding or deleting a family member for your University of California benefits are in this issue along with security tips for travelers, new choices for service anniversary awards and people in the news.

This issue's Spotlight is shined on a Lab employee who interned for U.S. Rep. Tom Udall, D-N.M., this past summer.

It may be hard to believe that inclement weather is on the way, but nonetheless, in this issue there is a reminder that when the weather gets "frightful," information about whether the Lab is on a delayed opening schedule, is closed or is closing early can be found at 667-6622 or toll free at 1-877-723-4101. Though the Update folks do not have the authority to make these decisions, they are one of the official messengers.

Employees can access L.A.N.L. at http://www.lanl.gov/worldview/news/lanl_archive.shtml online or obtain additional copies at the bright blue distribution boxes throughout the Lab. Organizations receiving too many or not enough should call the mailroom at 7-4166. If your organization's administrator is not putting the newsletter in your mailboxes, please encourage him or her to do so.
