Get ready for the slopes. The Wellness Center will offer an evening ski conditioning class. The class will meet from 6:45 - 7:30 p.m., Monday and Wednesday, beginning on Oct. 21. Progress from general muscle conditioning to ski specific exercises with extensive core training. If you haven't been a Wellness Center user recently, you may need a bike test to enter this advanced level III class. Bike tests will be scheduled afternoons this week--Wednesday through Friday. Updated 9/26/02 Feldenkrais Method class offered at Los Alamos Family YMCA The Los Alamos Family YMCA, a Laboratory sanctioned organization, is accepting registrations for its Feldenkrais Method class. Feldenkrais Method consists of gentle, verbally guided exercises for joint and muscle groups in the body. Karen Larsson of Santa Fe is the course instructor. The class meets from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. on Wednesdays beginning Oct. 16. The registration fee is $19 for YMCA members, $26 for nonmembers. The class begins Oct. 11 and consists of four, two-hour lessons. Mike Lazarus of the Swing and Country and Western Dance Studio is the course instructor. Updated 9/24/02 Art show at Mesa Public Library Watercolorist Dawn Davis will display her watercolors in the art gallery at the Mesa Public Library through the month of October. Davis’ paintings are a celebration of color. The opening for the exhibit will be from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 3. The public is invited to attend. In conjunction with the show, Davis plans to offer a workshop on Oct. 26 and 27. The two day workshop will cost $140 or include a one-day option at $75, and will be held at her studio in Santa Fe. The workshop will teach various traditional and non-traditional techniques with an emphasis on emotional healing and reaching for higher self through creative expression. Updated 9/24/02 Shelter Alumni calendar photo entries now being accepted The Friends of the Shelter is now accepting photographs of Los Alamos pets rescued from area shelters for the upcoming 2003 Shelter Alumni Calendar. The Shelter Alumni Calendar is designed to celebrate those special adopted companions that come to brighten our lives, often bringing with them a unique personality formed out of a mysterious past. Photos must be of pets adopted from the Los Alamos Animal Shelter or of family pets living in Los Alamos who were adopted from a shelter or rescue organization. The photo entry deadline is Friday, Oct. 4. will explore techniques for increasing occupational intimacy and discovering

Updated 9/19/02 Trinity Site tour on Oct. 5 The National Atomic Museum offers its semi-annual tour of the Trinity Site National Historic Landmark on Oct. 5. The tour will include docent lectures, visit to Ground Zero, viewing of Jumbo and visiting the McDonald Ranch House. Seats are limited, so make your reservations early by calling 242-6083. Tour buses will leave Winrock Shopping Center at 6 a.m. and return approximately at 4 p.m. Participants will be treated to lunch at New Mexico Tech. Cost of the tour is $45 per person. Updated 9/17/02 CHMM overview course and certification examination This course offering marks the first time that the New Mexico Society of Hazardous Materials Managers has sponsored the course and examination outside of Albuquerque. In order to take the examination, a person must meet the prerequisites of the IHMM. Please note that you must apply for the CHMM examination at least six weeks before the date of the examination. The cost of the course and examination is $700. This does not include application and examination fees charged by the IHMM. The institute features a series of learning experiences focused on the "being" aspects of organizational work, according to Harry Thomas of Training and Development (HR-6). It is structured for managers who want to improve their personal effectiveness as leaders. Updated 8/6/02 Training and Development (HR-TD) offers new class For managers and supervisors who want to interview for behaviors as well as technical skills and retain their employees, HR-TD is offering two workforce issues classes, "Talent Selection" and "Love 'em Or Lose 'em." The classes are open to anyone who supervises the work of others. This two-day class is offered on Oct. 9 and 10. The price for the combined classes is $600; however, one may take either class as a standalone option for just $300. Dani Fake of B.T. Novations teaches "Talent Selection," the first day of the course. The class focuses on the belief that it is easier for supervisors to identify technical excellence in potential job candidates than it is to quantify and identify excellence in the non-technical behaviors and characteristics necessary to ensure overall high performance. Managers and supervisors are coached to recognize and quantify traits within a behavior-based interview. Mindy Zaslov of Vengel-Lash Association is the instructor for "Love' Em or Lose 'Em," which provides supervisors with retention strategies they can implement. Supervisors participate in self-assessment and group activities to understand how their actions influence their employees' decisions to stay or leave. In the workshop, supervisors formulate strategies for retaining their key people and develop an action plan to implement their strategies. To register for the class, go to the Virtual Training Center from the Laboratory's home page by selecting Training/Learning in the lower left-hand corner. Next, select Leadership and then About People. Updated 9/26/02 Employees leaving Lab must attend termination presentation Employees who are leaving the Laboratory or changing to casual status must attend a benefits termination presentation held by Compensation and Benefits (HR-1). The termination presentations are held every Laboratory pay day for University of California Lab employees. Employees who are retiring aren't required to attend a presentation, but rather, they should schedule a meeting with their designated benefits specialist. The presentations begin at 8:30 a.m. in room P280 on the second floor of the Otowi Building at Technical Area 3. Pre-registration is required. Employees should register on line at http://www.lanl.gov/internal/training/training.html one to two weeks prior to their last scheduled work day to sign up for a benefits termination presentation. Employees also must obtain a departure processing form from HR-Staffing (HR-5) before the presentation. This form is available at http://www.hr.lanl.gov/hrstaffing/Terminations/index.stm online. At the presentation, employees will receive a packet of information about their benefits and savings balances. They will learn about options to continue or convert insurance plans and distribution options for savings funds. Employees who require a sign language interpreter should write to benefits@lanl.gov by e-mail three days in advance of the presentation they plan to attend. Because of limited parking, employees should plan to arrive early and/or make alternative transportation arrangements, such as using Johnson Controls Northern New Mexico's ride service.
