"Our Common Good 2002" highlights Lab's accomplishments in region

The Community Relations Office (CRO) recently published a report to the communities of Northern New Mexico titled "Our Common Good 2002." The annual report represents a sampling of Laboratory efforts that contribute to the region and is designed to inform regional neighbors of some of the Lab's accomplishments.

In an introductory message, Laboratory Director John Brown said, "While we fulfill an important mission for the nation, we also believe in taking care of important needs here at home. We are your neighbors, your friends and your colleagues. We are people who live in and support the surrounding economies and who value the same quality of life that all Northern New Mexicans hold so dear."

"The publication was produced specifically for Northern New Mexico communities because they are our neighbors and we have a stake in supporting the economic, academic and cultural life of our region," said Christina Armijo, CRO leader.

Some of the 2001 accomplishments highlighted in the report include

  • A donation of more than $2 million in excess equipment, including computers, cameras and microscopes, to universities, elementary and secondary schools and nonprofit organizations through the Laboratory Education Equipment Gift Program;
  • More than $1 billion in subcontracts awarded during the 2001 fiscal year; of that amount approximately $200 million was spent on subcontractor businesses providing facilities maintenance, protective services and fire protection services, and $112 million was spent with small businesses in Northern New Mexico, the rest of New Mexico and the rest of the United States;
  • The Lab's United Way giving campaign raised more than $690,000 in employee contributions to support education and social service programs; the Lab also conducts an annual Holiday Drive and Adopt a Family program;
  • Lab scientists earned three Research and Development Magazine R&D 100 awards for SCORR—Supercritical CO2 resist Remover, Tandem-Configured Solid-State Optical Limiter and Free-Space Quantum Cryptography honoring significant commercial promise in production, material or processes;
  • The Lab in conjunction with Sandia and Lawrence Livermore national laboratories certified that the nuclear stockpile is safe and reliable.

The 25-page report will be distributed to a variety of community leaders in the Northern New Mexico region. Copies are available by contacting Stephanie Martinez of CRO at 5-4400.
