Latest Los Alamos NewsLetter is being distributed, now online

In this week's issue of the Los Alamos NewsLetter, which is scheduled to appear in mailboxes and newstands this week, read about Laboratory researcher Giday WoldeGabriel, of Hydrology, Geochemistry and Geology (EES-6), who was part of the team that discovered the skull of Homo erectus and delved into the beginnings of man. To find out about the man behind the science, there is a companion Spotlight story about WoldeGabriel's quest for an education and his pathway to the Laboratory.

Also featured in this issue is a pull-out section on the Laboratory's research and technology projects submitted to R&D Magazine for the 2002 R&D 100 Award competition. GENIE, or GENetic Imagery Exploitation, system won one of this year's coveted awards. From "Diana TV," a single-channel digital HDTV and analog process, to the Attributive Measurement System, a tool for protecting data and verifying container contents, the Lab has developed a broad spectrum of research that has practical application.

When President Bush visited Argonne National Laboratory recently, he was briefed by Los Alamos Bioscience (B) Division Leader Jill Trewhella and Kristin Omberg of Systems Engineering and Integration (D-3). Of the five demonstrations set up for Bush, three were from the Los Alamos. To learn more about the president's Argonne visit, see this Page 2 article.

Employees can access L.A.N.L. at http://www.lanl.gov/worldview/news/lanl_archive.shtml online or obtain additional copies at the bright blue distribution boxes throughout the Lab. Organizations receiving too many or not enough issues can call the mailroom at 7-4166. If your organization's administrator is not putting the newsletter in your mailboxes, please encourage him or her to do so.
