Science Conversations series continues at BSMAug. 13 talk focuses on sustainable energyThe second in a series of Science Conversations at the Bradbury Science Museum is Tuesday (Aug. 13) with a talk on sustainable energy by Laboratory scientists Tom Baker and George Guthrie. Baker, of Actinide, Catalysis and Separations Chemistry (C-SIC), and Guthrie, of Hydrology, Geochemistry and Geology (EES-6), will speak on "Carbon Sequestration or "If you use it, put it back where it belongs!" The talk begins at 6:30 p.m. and is free and open to the public. Atmospheric carbon dioxide is already at an unprecedented high, continuing to rise, and will stay in the atmosphere affecting global climate long after the use of fossil fuels ends. The talk will focus on the good and bad news about fossil fuels and present information on efforts to remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. The evening will feature a demonstration of a technology called Laser Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy, which works to analyze CO2 in soil, as well as discussions about the solutions being sought to the sustainable energy problem by researchers at the Laboratory and around the world. Seating at the Bradbury Science Museum is limited and early attendance is encouraged. The museum is part of Los Alamos' Community Relations (CRO) Office. Bradbury Science Museum is located at 15th and Central Avenue downtown.
