Hispanic Scholarship Fund Career Exploration Day is Thursday at Lab

Undergraduate students and doctoral candidates from colleges around New Mexico, Southern Colorado and West Texas are at the Laboratory Thursday to learn about career and internship opportunities as part of Hispanic Scholarship Fund Career Exploration Day.

The Diversity Office (DVO) and the Education Program Office (STB-EPO) are sponsoring Hispanic Scholarship Fund Career Exploration Day from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Bradbury Science Museum downtown and the Otowi Building Cafeteria side rooms at Technical Area 3.

Participating students will hear presentations on safety at the Lab and on student programs and internship opportunities. Donald Quintana of Applied Engineering Technologies (ESA-AET) will speak on "Recipes for Success at the Laboratory and in Life," at 10:55 a.m.

Also included in the day's activities are presentations by Lab personnel and a panel discussion featuring Lab employees Erika Sanchez of Defense (BUS-2), Daniel Mendoza of Weapons Materials and Manufacturing (ESA-WMM) and Roxanne Tapia of McClintock Resource (B-1). All were Hispanic Scholarship Fund recipients while in college.

Students also will hear presentations from Staffing (HR-S) on hot jobs at the Lab; a diversity overview by Lisa Gutierrez, DVO director; and a talk on "the Roles and Limits of Technology in Countering Terrorism," by Cliff Giles, deputy leader for Nonproliferation and International Security (NIS).

There also will be breakout and question-and-answer sessions for students.

Lab employees are encouraged to meet the participating students during lunch at the Otowi Building Cafeteria between 11:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. Students will be wearing Hispanic Scholarship Fund badges.

The San Francisco-based Hispanic Scholarship Fund was created in 1975 to advance and promote college opportunities for Hispanic Americans across the United States and Puerto Rico.
