Recognizing student excellence

Laboratory Director John Browne congratulates Gabriela Sanchez, right, of Physical Chemistry and Applied Spectroscopy (C-PCS), at a distinguished student award presentation Monday in University House. Next to Sanchez is Bill Press, deputy Laboratory director for science and technology. At left is Peter Chiarelli of Michelson Resource (B-4). Chiarelli is an undergraduate student at California State Polytechnic University, Pomona. Sanchez graduated in May from Los Alamos High School and plans to attend Whittier College in California this fall. The two students were among several who were recognized at the presentation. Nathaniel Morgan, center, of Design Engineering (ESA-DE) and his wife Celina talk with Student Symposium keynote speaker Calvin Mackie, right, for his inspiring speech about success at the symposium awards banquet held recently at the Los Alamos Research Park. Nathaniel Morgan was a recipient of a student Distinguished Performance Award. Mackie, an associate professor of mechanical engineering at Tulane University, also is a motivational speaker who operates his own consulting firm and streamlining video Web site, which specializes in motivating young people to succeed. Mackie left students with the thought that “happiness is having dreams but success is making dreams come true.” Photo by Michael Carlson, Public Affairs
