WERC students learn about, present papers on ecological recovery

Peter Maggiore, right, cabinet secretary of the New Mexico Environment Department, talks with Abbas Ghassemi, executive director of the WERC program at the 2002 Summer Environmental Academy student presentations at the Los Alamos Inn last Friday. Maggiore told students and teachers that the Lab's Cerro Grande Rehabilitation Project presented students an ideal setting to study ecological recovery. Maggiore also spoke about NMED efforts during the 2000 Cerro Grande Fire.

Some of the nearly two dozen students who participated in the WERC 2002 Summer Environmental Academy listen to presentations last Friday. The Lab and WERC, a consortium of universities dedicated to expanding resources for addressing environmental issues, sponsored this year's academy. This year's academy participants learned the ins and outs of forest rehabilitation with hands-on field work. To view photos of WERC students in the field, see the July 19 Daily Newsbulletin.
