Updated 7/9/02 Volunteer opportunities The Los Alamos Lunch Buddy Foundation is recruiting volunteers for the Lunch Buddy program from 11 a.m.to 1 p.m. on Wednesday, July 10, at the Otowi Cafeteria. This very satisfying volunteer opportunity can begin shortly after school starts...however, if an interested person signs up now, you can be trained and guaranteed ready to go in Sept. A carefully screened, trained volunteer is paired with an elementary student who needs extra adult attention. Once a week for two semesters, they eat lunch together and then spend the remaining time playing games, doing arts/crafts projects together or just talking. This can be such an enjoyable experience that many adult volunteers have said they don't know who benefits more......the student Lunch Buddy or themselves. To download an application go to www.losalamos.com/lunchbuddies/ online. Complete the application and mail it to the Los Alamos address shown on the application, fax it to 753-8144 or call 470-3046 if you have any questions. LA Cares needs volunteers who are willing to help with the pick-up of food at the food depot in Santa Fe on the second Wednesday's (sometimes Thursday's) of each month. The volunteer would have to be available for about four hours during the day (10 a.m. to 2 p.m.) on the second Wednesday's of each month to travel to and from the Food Depot in Santa Fe. They would, of course, have a shadow to teach them the routine and, if enough people are interested, have another person at all times to help out. The person would need to have a large car, preferably a truck, and be able to pick up boxes of food (that is, they cannot have a back problem). They would shadow a present member of LA Cares and then do the pick-up when the current person is out of town or unavailable. They would either receive a gas voucher or a tax deduction for driving costs. Anyone who is interested can contact Amanda Sandoval by writing to lash@qwest.net by electronic mail or call 662-4666. "Behavior Interviewing for Employees" helps employees learn how to profile their skills based on career experience and enhances successful matching of potential employees with job requirements. Participants learn how to assess and communicate their skills in a positive, organized manner and how to develop skill-based career goals. To enroll, go to the Virtual Training Center from the Laboratory's home page by choosing Training/Learning in the lower left-hand corner. Then, select Workforce Development and then Career Builders. The classes are open to anyone who supervises the work of others. This two-day class is offered on Aug. 6-7, Sept. 10-11 and Oct. 9 and 10. The price for the combined classes is $600; however, one may take either class as a standalone option for just $300. Dani Fake of B.T. Novations teaches "Talent Selection," the first day of the course. Supervisors participate in self-assessment and group activities to understand how their actions influence their employees' decisions to stay or leave. In the workshop, supervisors formulate strategies for retaining their key people and develop an action plan to implement their strategies. To register for either class or the combined class, go to the Virtual Training Center from the Laboratory's home page by selecting Training/Learning in the lower left-hand corner.
