Quality of work life focus of fifth Student Conference on Sustainability at Lab

The quality of work life at the Laboratory is the focus of the fifth annual Student Conference on Sustainability next Monday and Tuesday (July 15-16). The Risk Reduction and Environmental Stewardship Division (RRES-DO) is hosting the conference at the Los Alamos Research Park.

Claire Kerven of RRES and co-producer of the conference said, "The first day we will talk about the concept of sustainability, this year's theme, quality of work life, set the context with several presentations and at the end we do a facilitated role play between generation x, generation y, boomers and Laboratory recruiters and try and find out what drives and sustains these different generations at work."

"This is a great opportunity for students to work in small groups to help solve Laboratory problems and discuss their ideas about solving these problems with management and give students a chance to solve their problems in an informal setting," added co-producer Ware Hartwell of Applied Technologies (RRES-AT).

The second day of the conference the students will be divided into teams and they will brainstorm their own ideas and solutions to sets of problems they are given. In the afternoon they will present their ideas to Lab senior management and discuss the solutions.

Terry Lowe of the Quality Improvement (QIO) Office will be the keynote speaker. Lowe recently returned to the Laboratory from the private sector where he was founder, president and chief executive officer of two successful corporations.

"In the past this conference has been very successful and has a growing reputation for dealing with real Laboratory problems in an exciting way and generating some usable solutions," said Kerven.

Students interested in participating must register by going to http://em.lanl.gov online.
