Warm, mostly dry in Los Alamos, White Rock in June

A warmer than normal June in Los Alamos and White Rock continued a pattern that has been in place over the entire southwest for several months.

But Los Alamos did record nearly 2 inches of precipitation last month, which was greater than average.

Los Alamos' mean maximum temperature of 85 degrees F was 6 F above normal for June. Its mean and mean minimum temperatures in June also were above normal.

Likewise for White Rock, the mean maximum temperature of 90 F was 6 F above normal for June, said Laboratory meteorologist Scot Johnson of Meteorology and Air Quality (RRES-MAQ). The mean and mean minimum temperatures in June also were above normal in White Rock.

High temperatures of 90 F on June 1 and 91 F on June 18 in Los Alamos established records, while high minimum temperature records were set on June 2 (56 F) and June 9 (63 F).

Four high temperature records were established in June in White Rock, said Johnson. The high of 94 F on June 1 was a record setter; 94 F on June 13, 93 F on June 17 and 95 F the next day also were records for those dates, he said.

One high minimum temperature record was established when the overnight low dropped only to 57 F June 1 in White Rock.

In Los Alamos, 1.9 inches of precipitation was recorded at the Technical Area 6 measuring station in June. Normal precipitation in Los Alamos in June is 1.44 inches, said Johnson.

However, only slightly more than a half-inch of precipitation (.52) was recorded at the Technical Area 54 measuring station in White Rock, which is half of the normal 1.04 inches for the month, said Johnson.

Johnson said much of the recorded precipitation in Los Alamos last month came from a thunderstorm June 21 that dropped 1.62 inches of precipitation. "The rainfall in this storm was highly concentrated during two 15-to-30-minute periods separated by about one and one-half hours," said Johnson.

Likewise in White Rock, nearly two-thirds of its total precipitation for the month -- .34 inches -- fell on June 21, Johnson said.

Wind gusts exceeding 40 miles per hour were recorded June 1, 2 and 3 in Los Alamos, and June 1 in White Rock.
