Nina Gallegos of Integrated Risk Analysis (HSR-3) tests an ergonomic ball at last month's Ergonomics Expo at Technical Area 59. The ergonomics ball is used to improve stretching and strengthening of muscles and for improving balance and posture. It also can be used as a chair. Photo by Lecole Trujillo, Public Affairs Next ergonomics expo scheduled for July 10The next ergonomics expo is scheduled from 9 a.m. to noon, July 10 in the large conference room of building 91 at Technical Area 22. The expo is open to all Laboratory employees with access to TA-22.This ergonomics expo will include new information and examples of ergonomics while driving, said Graciela Perez of Industrial Hygiene and Safety (HSR-5). Perez is the Laboratory's ergonomics program manager. The expo is part of the Lab's emphasis on ergonomics at work, home and play, she said. Perez said the new information includes useful tips on how to improve body posture, increase circulation in the body and reduce stress while commuting back and forth to work or to Lab facilities. "The information is especially timely because driving tends to increase during the summer months. A person could have great seating at work, but then commute for an hour before and after work or during a week of vacation in conditions that may strain the back, neck or shoulders," said Perez. New ergonomic tools also will be unveiled such as a grip strength dynamometer, which measures grip strength when fatigue and posture are considered. Dynamometers also measure the effect of wearing gloves on grip strength, added Perez. In addition to these new items the familiar self-help checklists, free yardsticks, ergonomic mirrors and vendors, such as Contract Associates, Goodman's and Steel Case, also are scheduled to participate in the ergonomics expo. Attendees who fill out a short survey will be eligible to win ergonomic door prizes. The Lab's Institutional Ergonomics Committee under the auspices of HSR-5 sponsors up to five ergonomics expos a year. HSR-5 provides the funding for these and other Labwide ergonomic activities. According to Brad Gallimore, acting group leader of HSR-5, "Ergonomic expos are a part of the strategic plan to focus attention, develop awareness and provide tools to help Laboratory workers increase overall health and safety."
