Monday, June 24, 2002 Mentors needed for Electromechanical Technician Training ProgramThe Laboratory is seeking mentors for its Electromechanical Technician Training Program, which will begin again in August at the University of New Mexico, Los Alamos campus.Sponsored by UNM-LA and the Laboratory, the program is designed to develop entry-level skills in electromechanics. Students enrolled in the program work at the Laboratory as part of their course requirements through a limited-term appointment. Those who earn a certificate in the program may be eligible for full-time, regular employment at the Lab. Students are assigned to work under the guidance of Laboratory technical staff members or senior technicians. A portion of the students' workday will be at school taking academic courses designed for and relating to their jobs. "A mentor can be broadly defined as a trusted advisor, teacher, coach, facilitator and role model," said Bonnie Martinez, a program coordinator at the Lab and a human resources generalist assigned to the Los Alamos Neutron Science Center (LANSCE). Martinez said the primary purpose of a mentor is to help students succeed. Effective mentoring can help students learn in a safe and professional work environment, and to establish a framework for what is expected in the work place. She said a mentor provides support and helps create a positive working environment by orienting students to the professional work environment. Martinez said she is looking for about 10 to 20 mentors from across the Lab. "The more mentors we have, the more students we can hire," she said. For more information, contact Martinez at 7-5534.
