Retirement reception for Raymond Alcouffe on June 27

Los Alamos Dog Obedience Club registration for summer classes on June 27

Los Alamos Dog Obedience Club, a Laboratory sanctioned organization, will have registration for its summer classes at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, June 27, at the LADOC club building at 246 East Road. Registration is on a first-come, first-served basis. Classes will begin the week of July 8.

Classes to be offered this session are: Puppy, Basic Manners, Agility, Canine Good Citizen, Recall and a special summer class on Hiking with Your Dog. The special hiking class will be held at 7:45 to 8:45 p.m. on Wednesdays for five weeks. The course will include: concentrated work on control exercises, safety and basic first aid,
trail etiquette and what to do if hikers run into other hikers or wildlife. A schedule and basic overview of the classes can be found at http://ladoc.dogbits.com online.

Dogs older than four months must be current on their DHPP and Rabies vaccinations. Dogs younger than four months must have started their DHPP series of vaccinations. If a dog was vaccinated by the breeder, a letter from the breeder is required noting such along with the vaccination schedule that was followed. If you are following a reduced vaccination protocol with your dog, then current titre reports from your veterinarian are required before class admission. Dogs older than four months and living in Los Alamos county must have a current county license which may be obtained through the Los Alamos Police Department.

Monte Carlo variance reduction class

A three day class on variance reduction techniques with the Monte Carlo code MCNP will be taught by Tom Booth July 30 - Aug. 1. Tom Booth has been a variance reduction expert in the Diagnostics Methods (X-5) group MCNP code team for over 25 years. The class will be a combination of lectures and computer practice time. Networx news

Hewlett Packard has obsoleted the popular 4550 color laser printer. The new Model 4600 has replaced the 4550. This is a 17ppm color laser printer with duplexing and networking capability. Deliveries are running seven weeks and need to be ordered now for this fiscal year delivery.

Training and Development (HR-TD) offers new classes

HR-TD is offering two new classes to present helpful behavior-based interviewing and retention techniques. "Behavior Interviewing for Employees" helps employees learn how to profile their skills based on career experience and enhances successful matching of potential employees with job requirements. Participants learn how to assess and communicate their skills in a positive, organized manner and how to develop skill-based career goals. The training is highly interactive with participant exercises, video reviews and class discussion.

The five-hour "Behavior Interviewing for Employees" course is free and will be held on July 10, Aug. 7 and Sept. 25. To enroll, go to the Virtual Training Center from the Laboratory's home page by choosing Training/Learning in the lower left-hand corner. Then, select Workforce Development and then Career Builders.

For managers and supervisors who want to interview for behaviors as well as technical skills and retain their employees, HR-TD is offering two workforce issues classes, "Talent Selection" and "Love 'em Or Lose 'em." The classes are open to anyone who supervises the work of others.

This two-day class is offered on Aug. 6-7, Sept. 10-11 and Oct. 9 and 10. The price for the combined classes is $600; however, one may take either class as a standalone option for just $300.

Dani Fake of B.T. Novations teaches "Talent Selection," the first day of the course. The class focuses on the belief that it is easier for supervisors to identify technical excellence in potential job candidates than it is to quantify and identify excellence in the non-technical behaviors and characteristics necessary to ensure overall high performance. Managers and supervisors are coached to recognize and quantify traits within a behavior-based interview.

Mindy Zaslov of Vengel-Lash Association is the instructor for "Love' Em or Lose 'Em," which provides supervisors with retention strategies they can implement. Supervisors participate in self-assessment and group activities to understand how their actions influence their employees' decisions to stay or leave. In the workshop, supervisors formulate strategies for retaining their key people and develop an action plan to implement their strategies.

To register for either class or the combined class, go to the Virtual Training Center from the Laboratory's home page by selecting Training/Learning in the lower left-hand corner. Next, select Leadership and then About People.

PERS long-term care enrollment for siblings ends June 30

The application kit for California Public Employees Retirement System’s Long-Term Care Program, in which siblings can now be enrolled, must be postmarked by June 30. Prior to this year, only spouses, parents and parent-in-laws were eligible to apply for the CalPERS Long-Term Care Program.

Long-term care includes a wide variety of services for people with prolonged physical illnesses, disabilities or cognitive disorders, such as Alzheimer's Disease. Long-term care may include home health care, adult day care, care in a nursing home, or help with daily activities at home, such as bathing and dressing.

10 K-A-Day update/announcement

Volunteer opportunities

Each year, thousands of abused and neglected children need short or longer-term foster care in New Mexico, and hundreds of these children become available for adoption. To learn more about how you can make a difference in the life of a child through foster care or adoption, you are invited to attend a free presentation by the Children, Youth and Families Department. 4th of July Pancakes on the Plaza
United We Stand…United We Flip (pancakes that is). In support of United Way Santa Fe County's 4th of July on the Plaza, the Laboratory Community Relations Office needs volunteers to flip pancakes and serve on the day of the event. Retirement reception for Mike Baker today

Mike Baker, former acting director of the Environmental Science and Waste Technology Division, will be retiring from the Laboratory after 27 1/2 years of service. Los Alamos County has new Library System online catalog

Los Alamos County recently announced an upgrade to the County's website. Part of that upgrade includes the addition of the Library System online catalog. Now you can search the library's more than 160,000 holdings, check your account, create a booklist, etc. To see your account, you must have a PIN, which you can obtain by calling the library circulation desk at 662-8250.

Laboratory organizations can set up information booths at County Fair

Los Alamos County is inviting Laboratory organizations to set up an information booth at its annual fair and festival Aug. 9 and 10. The Los Alamos County Fair, Festival and Rodeo is a Laboratory sanctioned event.

The information booths are approximately 10 square feet in size and will be set up around Ashley Pond. The county fair and festival is an opportunity for Laboratory organizations to meet with and talk to the public about their programs and projects. The deadline to sign up for booth space is Aug. 7.

Latest Management Institute session scheduled

Training and Development's (HR-TD) Management Institute No. 10 is scheduled to begin Aug. 14. The Management Institute is a series of two-day workshops that provide current management information from leading experts, practical and Laboratory-tested tools and techniques to help participants apply new knowledge, and the opportunity to share lessons learned and develop a network of support.

Managers can nominate any employee who supervises the work of others. Topics scheduled to be covered in this institute include:

  • The Management of Creative Professionals: how to deal with technically creative people who don't work well in teams.
  • The Mechanics of Money and People: how money flows from Washington to the Laboratory
  • Integrated Planning
  • Coaching Skills for Managers with an emphasis on performance improvement
  • Managing change.

Fourth of July run planned by Los Alamos Family YMCA

The Los Alamos Family YMCA, a Laboratory sanctioned organization, is sponsoring a Independence Day Firecracker Family 5-kilometer run.

The run begins at 8:30 a.m. and race-day registration is accepted between 7:30 and 8:15 that morning. Pre-registration is ongoing for the race, which include age group and male and female categories. The cost is $10 for the first family member, $8 for the second family member and $6 for each family member thereafter. T-shirts will be given to the first $100 people to sign up for the run.

New feature lets Lab workers renew library books online

Laboratory personnel can now renew library books online. The new service was operational on Wednesday (May 15).

In the library catalog, a "Circulation Record" button now appears in the upper left hand of the screen. This will take you to MyLibrary (http://mylibrary.lanl.gov/), the Research Library's personalization product. Lab workers can sign up as a MyLibrary customer and then go their own circulation record. Lab personnel who don't share a computer can elect to have the system remember their password.

Once in, click on the "Item List" to view library books currently checked out and their due date. There also is an option to renew any or all items checked out.

The new online renewal system also allows Lab workers to view items placed on hold and cancel any holds no longer needed.

Web page provides health care information for Lab employees, retirees

In a continuing effort to keep Laboratory workers and retirees apprised of the nationwide trend toward higher health-care costs on the UC system and the Lab and its neighboring region, the Lab has created a Web page.

The "Health Care Pathways to Change" Web page can be found at http://www.lanl.gov/worldview/welcome/health.shtml online. It contains Web links to previously published Daily Newsbulletin news stories, UC's benefits Web pages, local hospitals and information on health and wellness programs and prescription costs.

Leadership Center offers workshop for managers focusing on talent selection and retention strategies

To support managers in meeting hiring goal the Leadership Center is pleased to offer a two day workshop focusing on talent selection and retention strategies.

Day 1: Talent Selection, presented by B.T. Novations. This eight hour hands-on workshop focuses on the belief that it is easier for managers to identify technical excellence in potential job candidates than it is to quantify and identify excellence in the softer skills that are necessary to ensure overall high performance in a new worker. Managers will be coached to systematically identify and quantify the non-technical behaviors and characteristics they want to see when interviewing potential workers. Having once identified the behaviors and characteristics that would enhance overall team performance (such as problem-solving ability, communication capability, collaboration, etc.), managers will use tools to develop a question set that can be used in interviews to understand whether or not the candidate possesses the desired traits. Participants will also learn how to evaluate the information they receive in an interview as a basis for making a hiring selection.

Day 2: Love 'Em or Lose 'Em, presented by Vengel-Lash Associates. This eight hour interactive workshop provides managers with retention strategies that they can implement now. Managers will participate in self-assessment and group activities to understand how their actions affect their employees' decisions to stay or go. In the workshop managers will formulate strategies for retaining their key people and develop an action plan to put their strategies in motion.

The cost for the two day workshop is $600. Four workshops have been scheduled: June 25-26, August 6-7, September 10-11 and October 9-10. All workshops will run from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Canyon School. Employees leaving Lab must attend termination presentation

Employees who are leaving the Laboratory or changing to casual status must attend a benefits termination presentation held by Compensation and Benefits (HR-1).

The termination presentations are held every Laboratory pay day for University of California Lab employees. Employees who are retiring aren't required to attend a presentation, but rather, they should schedule a meeting with their designated benefits specialist.

The presentations begin at 8:30 a.m. in room P280 on the second floor of the Otowi Building at Technical Area 3. Pre-registration is required. Employees should register on line at http://www.lanl.gov/internal/training/training.html one to two weeks prior to their last scheduled work day to sign up for a benefits termination presentation.

Employees also must obtain a departure processing form from HR-Staffing (HR-5) before the presentation. This form is available at http://www.hr.lanl.gov/hrstaffing/Terminations/index.stm online.

At the presentation, employees will receive a packet of information about their benefits and savings balances. They will learn about options to continue or convert insurance plans and distribution options for savings funds.

Employees who require a sign language interpreter should write to benefits@lanl.gov by e-mail three days in advance of the presentation they plan to attend. Or call the benefits office at 5-3842 (TDD).

Because of limited parking, employees should plan to arrive early and/or make alternative transportation arrangements, such as using Johnson Controls Northern New Mexico's ride service.
