Editor's Note: As part of National Men's Health Week, the Wellness Center (HSR-2) has partnered with the Men's Health Network to promote year-round men's health. All this week a bulletin board display at the Wellness Center at Technical Area 3 will contain information on men's health and wellness. Displays also will be set up at additional locations around the Laboratory. The Wellness Center also has Men's Maintenance Manuals, screening guides and other men's health related brochures. This week, the Daily Newsbulletin is publishing a men's health tip. For more information, contact the Wellness Center at 7-7166.

Osteoporosis

Osteoporosis, the bone thinning disease that leads to painful, debilitating bone fractures, affects five million American men. While there has been increased national recognition of osteoporosis as a major women's health problem, the impact of this disease on men has been under-diagnosed, under-reported, and inadequately researched.

The following are tips for prevention:

  • change unhealthy habits such as smoking, excessive alcohol intake and inactivity
  • ensure a daily calcium intake of 1,000 milligrams per day (mg/day) to age 50 and 1,200 mg/day over age 51
  • engage in a regular regimen of weight-bearing exercises, such as walking or hiking, where bones and muscles work against gravity
  • recognize and treat any underlying medical conditions that affect bone health
  • discuss with your doctor the use of medications that are known to cause bone loss.
