June Body Bulletin newsletter is being distributed to mail stops

The June issue of the Body Bulletin newsletter is being distributed to Laboratory workers at their mail stops. Body Bulletin and the online Personal Best newsletter replace the Wellstreet Journal formerly published by Occupational Medicine (HSR-2).

June is National Safety Month and this month's issue features two topical articles: "Shedding Light on Safety at Night" and "Accident-Free Boating."

This month's issue states that informed health consumers are partially responsible for increasing the length of a physician office visit by one and two minutes between 1989-1999. Additionally, the article "Medical News You Can Use," provides readers with five questions for evaluating the latest health and medicine claims. For more information on being a wise health consumer, request the self-care booklet "Being a Wise Health Care Consumer" from Jessica Kisiel by calling 5-4368 or writing to jkisiel@lanl.gov by electronic mail.

For reliable health information, Laboratory employees enrolled in one of the health care plans also can turn to the registered nurses at Health Connection. This Mayo Clinic service offered though the Positive Health Directions Program will be changing its name to "Ask Mayo Clinic" in August. Employees will receive postcards in the mail this month and new membership materials in July.

Common questions for quitting the cigarette habit are contained in this month's issue. Los Alamos' Employee Assistance Program (EAP) also provides smoking cessation help. Support groups, individual counseling and various educational materials are available for Lab employees, dependents and contract workers. Call 7-7339 or go to http://int.lanl.gov/worklife/health/eap/eap_smoking.shtml online for more information.

A morning shake is the recipe for a healthy start to the day this month. Try a mango pineapple or banana peach smoothie for a breakfast filled with calcium, protein and fiber.

Also in this issue: watching salt intake, Men's Health, Lyme Disease precautions, an exercise quiz for expectant mothers, tips to protect your skin while enjoying a stress-relieving bath and self-care for sunburns.

Body Bulletin and Personal Best are published by Scott Publishing in Edmonds, Wash., and are part of the Lab's Positive Health Directions program in HSR-2 and Compensation and Benefits (HR-CB).
