Team openings still available for foundation bowlathon SaturdayScholarship fund drive continues through May 31 Laboratory workers can register through Friday for the Los Alamos National Laboratory Foundation and the Los Alamos Employees' Scholarship Fund Bowl-a-thon in Española. The Bowl-a-thon is from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Saturday at the Big Rock Casino Bowl in Española with all proceeds going to scholarships for high school seniors and undergraduate students in Northern New Mexico. Thirty-eight, five-person teams are signed up to bowl, according to Tony Fox of the Laboratory Foundation, which manages the Los Alamos Employees' Scholarship Fund. People can sign up as five-member teams or as individuals who will be placed on a team. The entry fee is $50 per person or $250 per team. The entry fee includes three games and lunch. The first flight of 24 teams will bowl from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and the second flight of teams will bowl from 1 to 3:30 p.m. Lunch is served from noon to 1 p.m. Participants who bowl a perfect game of 300 will be eligible to win a new 2002 Ford Ranger truck compliments of Rio Valley Ford in Española. The team with the best combined score and the team with the best uniform will win prizes. Also, several raffle prizes will be given throughout the day. The Foundation is covering the overhead expenses of the event, and Big Rock Casino Bowl is donating the bowling alley lanes for the day. The Los Alamos Employees' Scholarship Fund is a volunteer organization managed by the Los Alamos National Laboratory Foundation, which was founded in 1997 to enhance the vitality of the region by investing in education, learning and community development. Laboratory workers have until May 31 to return completed pledge forms for the 2002-2003 scholarship fund drive to the foundation's Santa Fe offices. Through Tuesday, about $50,000 has been pledged and donated to this year's campaign, said Fox. Lab workers who are members of the Los Alamos Employees' Scholarship Fund advisory board will be at various Laboratory technical areas throughout the campaign to accept completed pledge forms. From 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday through Thursday in May volunteers will be at the Otowi Building at Technical Area 3. And once a week through the end of May, volunteers also will be accepting completed pledge forms at the Los Alamos Neutron Science Center at TA-53, at TA-55 and at S-Site. The complete schedule of where volunteers will be around the Lab can be found on the Laboratory Foundation Web page at www.lanlfoundation.org online. Since 1998 the Foundation has awarded 156 scholarships totaling $425,000 to students residing in seven counties in Northern New Mexico. Scholarship awards range from $10,000 for four years to $1,000 one-time awards.
