Johnson Controls Northern New Mexico, Española Public Schools and the Greater Española Valley Community Development Corp. are sponsoring a campus spring cleaning Friday and Saturday at Española Valley High School on El Llano Road. The presentation is for employees who are eligible to retire within the next five years. “Countdown to Retirement” is from 8:30 to 10 a.m. and again from 10:30 a.m. to noon. Both sessions are in the Physics Building Auditorium at Technical Area 3. Countdown to Retirement reviews lifestyle and financial considerations. It also covers details on retirement account distribution options, building a financial plan and tax considerations. Pre-retirees will work through retirement expenses, income sources and strategies to help determine what steps to take in order to achieve their retirement goals. The Wellness Center is offering a one-hour class, from noon to 1p.m. Tuesday, May 21, where you will analyze the current balance in your life and explore ways to set your life priorities. In addition, participants will learn about simple approaches to improving balance and gaining more satisfaction in life. The class will be held in Room 106 of the Wellness Center. To support managers in meeting hiring goal the Leadership Center is pleased to offer a two day workshop focusing on talent selection and retention strategies. Day 1: Talent Selection, presented by B.T. Novations. This eight hour hands-on workshop focuses on the belief that it is easier for managers to identify technical excellence in potential job candidates than it is to quantify and identify excellence in the softer skills that are necessary to ensure overall high performance in a new worker. Managers will be coached to systematically identify and quantify the non-technical behaviors and characteristics they want to see when interviewing potential workers. Having once identified the behaviors and characteristics that would enhance overall team performance (such as problem-solving ability, communication capability, collaboration, etc.), managers will use tools to develop a question set that can be used in interviews to understand whether or not the candidate possesses the desired traits. Participants will also learn how to evaluate the information they receive in an interview as a basis for making a hiring selection. Day 2: Love 'Em or Lose 'Em, presented by Vengel-Lash Associates. This eight hour interactive workshop provides managers with retention strategies that they can implement now. Managers will participate in self-assessment and group activities to understand how their actions affect their employees' decisions to stay or go. In the workshop managers will formulate strategies for retaining their key people and develop an action plan to put their strategies in motion. The cost for the two day workshop is $600. Four workshops have been scheduled: June 25-26, August 6-7, September 10-11 and October 9-10. All workshops will run from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Canyon School. Updated 05/13/02 Cancer Society Relay for Life is May 18 at Ashley Pond The American Cancer Society's annual Relay for Life is scheduled for May 18 at Ashley Pond. The American Cancer Society and the relay are Laboratory sanctioned. The relay involves teams of individuals who walk in and around the pond area and raise funds through pledges and donations. All funds raised are used for cancer research and support services. Last year's Relay for Life raised more than $212 million in 3,000 communities and eight countries. A concert at 8 p.m. May 17 by Tish Hinojosa also will raise funds for the Relay for Life. For more information on the Relay for Life, go to www.cancer.org online or call 988-5548. Updated 05/06/02 Youth volleyball registration begins at Los Alamos Family YMCA The Los Alamos Family YMCA, a Laboratory sanctioned organization, is now registering kindergarten through eighth grade youths for its volleyball programs. "Kindervolleyball" is for children ages 4 and 5. "Bumpers" is for first and second grade students; "Spikers" is for children in grades three through eight. The program for 4 and 5 year olds is from 10 to 11 a.m. Tuesday and Thursday from June 11 to July 11. The cost to participate is $20 for members, $30 for nonmembers. Registration ends June 5. The Bumpers program is from June 3 to July 12 and cost $25 for members, $30 for nonmembers. Registration ends May 28. The Spikers begin play in July and continue through August. Starting and ending dates will be announced by the YMCA. Registration ends July 1 and the cost is $30 for YMCA members, $40 for nonmembers. After 12 institutes, participants continue to rate the experience very highly, with more than 90 percent giving the institutes an overall “A” score. Updated 04/16/02 2002 Annual Technical Meeting of the Southwest Regional Chapter of the INMM on May 16 The Second Annual Technical Meeting of the Southwest Regional Chapter of the Institute of Nuclear Materials Management will take place on May 16 at the Kachina Lodge in Taos. The meeting will start at 9 a.m. and continue until 5 p.m. The meeting will consist of technical presentations and discussions on current topics. The topics range from discussions of international policy to "How good is good enough?" Updated 04/10/02 Los Alamos YMCA registering youths for two summer programs The Los Alamos Family YMCA, a Laboratory sanctioned organization, is registering youths for its Earth Service Corps and Counselor in Training summer programs. The Earth Services Corps combines volunteer service, environmental education and work experience in a program that focuses on trail improvement, landscaping and watershed restoration. The supervised program runs from June 4 to Aug. 9 and is for youths 11 to 15 years of age. The Counselor in Training supervised program incorporates counselor training and volunteer work at the YMCA Day Camp. This program runs from June 4 to Aug. 21 and is for youths 12 to 15 years of age. The registration fee is $100 for YMCA members, $125 for nonmembers. Early registration is encouraged; class sizes are limited. Updated 03/01/02 Employees leaving Lab must attend termination presentation Employees who are leaving the Laboratory or changing to casual status must attend a benefits termination presentation held by Compensation and Benefits (HR-1). The termination presentations are held every Laboratory pay day for University of California Lab employees. Employees who are retiring aren't required to attend a presentation, but rather, they should schedule a meeting with their designated benefits specialist. The presentations begin at 8:30 a.m. in room P280 on the second floor of the Otowi Building at Technical Area 3. Pre-registration is required. Employees should register on line at http://www.lanl.gov/internal/training/training.html one to two weeks prior to their last scheduled work day to sign up for a benefits termination presentation. At the presentation, employees will receive a packet of information about their benefits and savings balances.
