Monday, May 13, 2002 DOE land closed to hiking, recreation due to fire dangerDue to extreme fire danger, the Laboratory is prohibiting recreational access to Department of Energy land. In particular, areas affected include Bayo Canyon and lower Pueblo Canyon, as well as DOE land located to the south of N.M. 4 between Pajarito Acres and Bandelier National Monument. Hikers, bikers and others have used those areas in the past for recreational purposes. Given the extreme fire conditions and continuing drought, the areas will remain closed until further notice. Security personnel from Bandelier National Monument have been given authority to patrol the affected areas and enforce the closure. "We hope the public will understand that severe fire danger requires these areas to remain off limits in order to avoid potential tragedy," said Dave Smith the Office of Security Inquiries (S-OSI). "We are asking for everyone's cooperation and understanding." Other Headlines Supercomputing's "father" to speak Friday at Laboratory more...
