LinkSeeker improves access to Research Library electronic journal articles

Laboratory workers who access electronic journal articles through the Research Library (STB-RL) have a new linking tool called LinkSeeker to aid them in their searches. The new service started last week.

The change is taking place because the Research Library's current linking system is old technology and can't accommodate publisher changes quickly enough to keep linking to full-text articles current, explained Frances Knudson of STB-RL.

LinkSeeker provides users the following capabilities:

  • tells the user if the full-text is available
  • connects the user to an order process if the full-text isn't available, such as requesting a copy of an article
  • runs a citation search on the paper or authors
  • locates other articles by the author (via FlashPoint)
  • does a Web search with the user's choice of search engine
  • does a search in other libraries
  • does a search in the Department of Energy's InfoBridge for full-text reports
  • provides live help from reference librarians.

Until last Wednesday, Research Library-provided databases have shown both the LinkSeeker icon, and for some citations, a PDF or HTML icon. Now, users won't see PDF or HTML icons; they should use the LinkSeeker icon instead, said Knudson.

LinkSeeker also provides article-level links to full-text instantly as new content is put online; article-level links to more e-journals and JSTOR historic backfiles, such as Science 1880-1996.

Knudson said links to the American Physical Society titles will work correctly and as more databases are added by the Research Library for use by Lab workers, articles will be linked more rapidly.
