Browne's APS speech emphasizes Labs' cutting-edge capabilities

Laboratory Director John Browne talked about the Laboratory's most current work post Cold-War and post Sept. 11, 2001at the annual meeting of the American Physical Society in Albuquerque on Sunday. Browne also spoke of the Lab's need to attract great scientists with the best in user facilities. "It's important as a national Lab to attract great scientists to work at Los Alamos and to bring in visiting scientists from universities and other organizations. Without these interdisciplinary collaborations it becomes more difficult to accomplish our mission," said Browne. The director spoke of the Lab's post Cold-War mission including efforts in threat reduction, strategic research and stockpile stewardship. He spoke about the Lab's work post Sept. 11, 2001, including efforts in nuclear emergency response, national infrastructure modeling, remote sensing and biological agent identification and characterization. Browne touched on Los Alamos' history several times, notably in the area of space science, explaining that the early work on the VELA treaty verification satellites has now evolved into programs like the recent Mars Odyssey mission and its Lab-built gamma ray and neutron spectroscopy that has lead to strong indications of the presence of water on Mars. Browne's speech was the final presentation of an afternoon-long series of talks on the history of Los Alamos that included a session on the role of the Special Engineering Detachment at Los Alamos during WWII, and a talk by Francis Harlow of Fluid Dynamics (T-3) on the importance of characterizing small-scale complex processes. The conference continues today in the Albuquerque Convention Center downtown. Photo by Kevin N. Roark, Public Affairs Office
