The Northern New Mexico Chapter of ARMA is holding their Spring Seminar on April 25 at the Glorietta Conference Center. This seminar will include topics such as "The Automation, Management and Regulations of Records in the 21st Century" plus five records management software demonstrations by various vendors. ASME/ASQ meeting tonight

Free Children’s Craft Programs – May Baskets

Promoting Healthy Behaviors (new dates)
A research-based prevention program developed by Dr. J. David Hawkins and Dr. Richard F. Catalano. The goal of the five-week multi-media program is to empower parents of children ages 8-14 to reduce the risks that their
children will abuse alcohol, other drugs or develop other common adolescent problems. The class teaches parents how to reduce critical risk factors and enhance protective factors that are especially important during the late
elementary and middle school years. Current clinical results of the program have shown to: reduce alcohol and marijuana use by up to 40.6 percent, reduce progression to more serious substance abuse by 54 percent, increase the likelihood that non-users will remain drug-free by 26 percent.

Instructor: Stacey Kwiatkowski, LA Middle School Counselor. 6 to 8 p.m., Thursdays (April 25, May 2, 9,16 and 23) at the Los Alamos Middle School. Cost: $40 - Scholarships are available. Offered by Family Strengths Network in collaboration with Los Alamos Public Schools Prevention Department, Los Alamos Middle School and Safe and Drug Free Schools and Communities Grant.

Alcohol: No-Use No-Abuse
A program designed for 8th graders at the middle school. The course will be held from 3 to 5 p.m. on Monday through Thursday at the middle school starting May 6 - 16. Contact FSN for more information.

ReefNews presents slide show on May 2

ReefNews Inc., a Laboratory sanctioned organization, will present the slide show, "San Salvador: Jewel of the New World," at 7:30 p.m. May 2 at Allied Fine Foods in Los Alamos. This presentation will feature photographs of colorful coral reefs with hundreds of species of fish and other marine life, tropical sunsets on spotless beaches and the controversial site of the 1492 Columbus landfall.

Tickets are $3 per person or $5 per family at the door. All proceeds benefit the ReefNews "Oceans in the Desert - 2002" project that brings educational materials about oceans to schools throughout Northern New Mexico.

ReefNews Inc. is a nonprofit educational and research organization. ReefNews teaches students of all ages about the oceans and their shores using the beauty and mystery of the oceans to inspire enthusiasm for science, according to Jonathan Dowell of Weapon Design Technologies (NIS-9).

OS/GS 2002 "Taking Initiative" event on May 1 and 2

Two days of free workshops will be offered at OS/GS 2002: "Taking Initiative" May 1 and 2 at Canyon Complex. The event, sponsored by learning@lanl, features several nationally-known presenters who will conduct classes in improving communications, creating change in the workplace, balancing professional and personal life, and more. The workshops are specifically designed for administrative and support personnel at the Laboratory, but the entire workforce is welcome to register for classes.

Leadership Institute June 2-7 accepting nominations

The Leadership Institute in Training and Development (HR-6) is accepting nominations for its next session June 2-7.

The Leadership is a unique series of powerful learning experiences focused on the "being" aspects of organizational work. It is structured for managers who want to improve their personal effectiveness as leaders. After 12 institutes, participants continue to rate the experience very highly, with more than 90 percent giving the institutes an overall “A” score.

Sports Car Club del Valle Rio Grande conducting driving school on April 27

The Sports Car Club del Valle Rio Grande will be conducting a novice autocross driving school on April 27 at the New Mexico State Police Academy driving facility in Santa Fe. This school is intended for drivers with no more than two years of autocross experience, and is also recommended for anyone interested in improving their driving skills but who might not be interested in competition. Topics to be covered include finding the handling limits of a car, basic car control techniques and discussion of ways to improve the handling of a car. Instruction will be primarily in-car, along with various discussions and demonstrations. Our instructors have a huge amount of experience both in competition and in driving instruction. Participants are guaranteed to have fun. Anyone interested should contact Rick Hinckley at 672-1092.

Sangre de Cristo Chorale concludes its concert season with "Never Only A Capella"

The 40-voice Sangre de Cristo Chorale, under the direction of Sheldon Kalberg and accompanied by Cindy Little, will close its twenty-fourth concert season with "Never Only A Capella," with performances in Santa Fe and Los Alamos. These concerts will present works featuring composers such as Dello Joio, Lauridsen, Pinkham, Whitacre, Haydn, Beethoven, and others, in a special tribute to our wonderful accompanist, Cindy Little. As a special added feature, a portion of the concert will be conducted by Jennaya Robison, our intern this season in Choral Conducting from the University of New Mexico.

The performances will be at 2:30 p.m. on May 5 at the Santa Maria de la Paz Catholic Church in Santa Fe and at 7:30 p.m. May 4 at the United Church in Los Alamos. Tickets are $15 for regular admission and $10 for senior citizens and will be available at the door, or by contacting the Chorale.

Volunteers needed for horseback riding program

CNM North Mesa Riders is looking for volunteers age 15 and up to help with the horseback-riding program for people with disabilities. The riding program will begin on May 14 at the North Mesa stables and run through September. No previous horse experience is necessary to volunteer. *Volunteers are needed for Tuesday evenings from 4:30 to 5:45 p.m. and 5:30 to 6:45 p.m., Wednesdays from 1 to 3 and 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. and on Saturday mornings from 9:30 to 11 a.m.

New volunteers are encouraged to attend one of two orientation and safety information sessions from 7 to 8 p.m. scheduled on April 24 and April 30 at the United Church on Canyon Road, Graves Hall. The public is welcome to attend these sessions. The training program will provide information on how to safely lead horses, support riders and provide safe riding activities. Volunteers who attend one of these sessions and complete the necessary paperwork will be invited to participate in a hands-on training session from 10 to 11:30 a.m. at the stable on Saturday, May 4.

CNM North Mesa Riders provides equine-oriented activities, in conformance with guidelines established by the North American Riding for the Handicapped Association (NARHA), to make a positive contribution to Los Alamos County and Northern New Mexico community members who face physical, emotional and mental challenges. Our program also strives to provide our students, volunteers and community with a better understanding and appreciation of how horse and all animals contribute to the well being of people. CNM North Mesa Riders is a Laboraytory sanctioned organization.

2002 Annual Technical Meeting of the Southwest Regional Chapter of the INMM on May 16

The Second Annual Technical Meeting of the Southwest Regional Chapter of the Institute of Nuclear Materials Management will take place on May 16 at the Kachina Lodge in Taos. The meeting will start at 9 a.m. and continue until 5 p.m.

The meeting will consist of technical presentations and discussions on current topics. The topics range from discussions of international policy to "How good is good enough?" For those wishing to socialize at an unhosted post meeting dinner, a group reservation will be made at a nearby restaurant.

Rooms at the Kachina Lodge are available for those wishing to stay overnight in Taos. Room rates are $59 for a single and $69 for a double, the rate is available until May 10. Walking coordinators for 10 K-A-Day needed

Our thoughts are turning to spring, and our feet are turning to walking. The Wellness Center is gearing up for an all new walking program, and we need walking coordinators to get this off the ground. This year's program, 10 K-A-Day, uses the power of pedometers to get people moving. Walking coordinators will receive a small gift, along with the larger gift of motivating yourself and coworkers to add steps to their day.

Walking Coordinators (as of Friday, April 5): 22 groups have walking coordinators, 33 walking coordinators still needed.

Each year at the annual Veteran's Day Fun Run the committee hamds out T-shirts to the participants. Since the current design has been around for several years, it's time for a new design. County fair and rodeo queen, court competition now underway

Girls and women between the ages of 14 and 23 are being sought to compete for the Los Alamos County Fair and Rodeo queen and court. The deadline to sign up as a candidate is May 10, with the queen and court competition scheduled for May 18 at Brewer Arena. The Los Alamos County Fair and Rodeo is a Laboratory sanctioned event.

Winners will participate in the Red River Rodeo and the Santa Fe Rodeo, in addition to reigning over the Los Alamos County Festival, Fair and Rodeo in August. Criteria for selecting the rodeo queen includes horsemanship (60 percent of the decision) and personality (40 percent). Contestants make a formal speech before a panel of judges, and compete in horsemanship contests.

In September, rodeo queens from around the state compete for the title of State Rodeo Queen at the State Fair in Albuquerque. The statewide winner receives another crown and buckle, in addition to a saddle and $1,000.

Los Alamos Dog Jog is April 27

Get ready pet lovers. The 2002 Los Alamos Dog Jog, a Laboratory sanctioned event, is set for the morning of Saturday, April 27, at Chamisa School in White Rock. Coordinated as a fundraiser for the Friends of the Shelter, this 5K run/walk is open to all ages and families (with or without canine), and all dogs on leashes with current license and vaccinations. An optional 2-mile course is also available. You don't have a dog, you say? Not to worry. Friendly shelter dogs will be available for hire on race day (on a first come, first served basis) as your guest around the course for a nominal donation.

The $15 Early Bird registration ends Friday, April 2, so sign up now. Family discounts are also available. Bench press contest at YMCA

The Los Alamos Family YMCA, a Laboratory sanctioned organization, is accepting registrations for its 12th annual bench press contest on May 4. There are weight and age categories for men and women and the first 40 registrants will receive a free bench press t-shirt.

Los Alamos YMCA registering youths for two summer programs

The Los Alamos Family YMCA, a Laboratory sanctioned organization, is registering youths for its Earth Service Corps and Counselor in Training summer programs. The Earth Services Corps combines volunteer service, environmental education and work experience in a program that focuses on trail improvement, landscaping and watershed restoration. The supervised program runs from June 4 to Aug. 9 and is for youths 11 to 15 years of age.

The Counselor in Training supervised program incorporates counselor training and volunteer work at the YMCA Day Camp. This program runs from June 4 to Aug. 21 and is for youths 12 to 15 years of age. The registration fee is $100 for YMCA members, $125 for nonmembers. Early registration is encouraged; class sizes are limited.

Employees leaving Lab must attend termination presentation

Employees who are leaving the Laboratory or changing to casual status must attend a benefits termination presentation held by Compensation and Benefits (HR-1).

The termination presentations are held every Laboratory pay day for University of California Lab employees. Employees who are retiring aren't required to attend a presentation, but rather, they should schedule a meeting with their designated benefits specialist.

The presentations begin at 8:30 a.m. in room P280 on the second floor of the Otowi Building at Technical Area 3. Pre-registration is required. Employees should register on line at http://www.lanl.gov/internal/training/training.html one to two weeks prior to their last scheduled work day to sign up for a benefits termination presentation.

Employees also must obtain a termination checklist from HR-Staffing (HR-5) before the presentation.

At the presentation, employees will receive a packet of information about their benefits and savings balances. They will learn about options to continue or convert insurance plans and distribution options for savings funds.

Employees who require a sign language interpreter should write to benefits@lanl.gov by e-mail three days in advance of the presentation they plan to attend. Or call the benefits office at 5-3842 (TDD).

Because of limited parking, employees should plan to arrive early and/or make alternative transportation arrangements, such as using Johnson Controls Northern New Mexico's ride service.
