May Safety Check Solutions newsletter is being distributed to mail stopsThe May issue of the Safety Check Solutions newsletter is being distributed to Laboratory workers at their mail stops. Safety Check Solutions, Body Bulletin and the online Personal Best replace the Wellstreet Journal formerly published by Occupational Medicine (HSR-2).This will be the final issue of Safety Check Solutions distributed to Laboratory workers. Scott Publishing has discontinued the newsletter for business reasons. Laboratory workers will continue to receive the Body Bulletin newsletter monthly for the remainder of the 2002 fiscal year. The cover story of this month's issue reminds workers to take time for safety. Faster is not better when safety is sacrificed. In celebration of National Seat Belt Safety Month, this month's quiz is on seat belt smarts. Buckle Up America Week is May 20-27. This year the week will target teenagers, a high-risk population. Law enforcement will be mobilized to enforce state seat belt and child passenger safety laws during the week in a "Click it or Ticket" campaign. Spring draws people outdoors to garden, exercise and generally be more active. Follow the guidance in this month's Smart Moves column to avoid injuries and other aches and pains common to spring time activities. Start a walking program in May. Register for this year's Wellness Center walking incentive program "10-K-A Day." Participants in this year's five-week program will be motivated to increase daily steps though the use of a pedometer. Also in this issue: safety principles to keep in mind when working with electricity, tips for maximizing daylight for shift workers, scaffold safety and five stretches to re-energize tired, achy muscles. Safety Check Solutions, Body Bulletin and online Personal Best are published by Scott Publishing in Edmonds, Wash., and are part of the Lab's Positive Health Directions program in HSR-2 and Compensation and Benefits (HR-1).
