Science Day 2002 on Wednesday showcases Laboratory's research, programsThe Laboratory's second annual "Science Day" is scheduled for Wednesday in the Jemez and Cochiti rooms of the J. Robert Oppenheimer Study Center at Technical Area 3. This year's theme is "Making the world a safer place." The guest speaker is Maureen McCarthy, chief scientist for the National Nuclear Security Administration.As chief scientist, McCarthy coordinates and advises the NNSA administrator on technical and policy issues related the department's programs in counterterrorism, homeland security, nuclear weapons and nonproliferation. She is the NNSA liaison to the national laboratories and to the under secretary for Energy, Science and Environmental Management. McCarthy also was senior advisor to the secretary of energy for National Security and Nuclear Energy and science advisor to the assistant secretary for Nonproliferation and National Security. McCarthy's honors include the Lady Davis Postdoctoral Fellow from the Fritz Haber Center for Molecular Dynamics at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem. She also was awarded the American Association for the Advancement of Science Defense Policy Fellowship, and her professional achievements include Woman of Achievement at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory. McCarthy has a doctoral degree in chemical physics from the University of Colorado at Boulder. Science Day includes presentations by Laboratory researchers, posters sessions and tours of the Proton Radiography Facility at TA-53. Science Day is open to all Laboratory workers and everyone is encouraged to attend. Laboratory personnel can register for one of the four tours of the Proton Radiography Facility by contacting Mariana Martinez of the Protocal Office at 7-5670 or by writing to mvmartinez@lanl.gov by electronic mail. Presentations are from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the Jemez and Cochiti rooms of the Study Center. The presentations will be simulcast on Labnet at both the Administration Building Auditorium and the Physics Building Auditorium at TA-3. Poster sessions begin at 1:15 p.m. in the Santa Clara Gallery on the top floor of the Study Center. Transportation is available for Lab workers interested in attending Science Day.
