Leadership Institute June 2-7 accepting nominations The Leadership Institute in Training and Development (HR-6) is accepting nominations for its next session June 2-7. The Leadership is a unique series of powerful learning experiences focused on the "being" aspects of organizational work. It is structured for managers who want to improve their personal effectiveness as leaders. After 12 institutes, participants continue to rate the experience very highly, with more than 90 percent giving the institutes an overall “A” score. Participation is by nomination and is open to anyone who supervises the work of others and to senior technical staff members. Updated 04/15/02 Wellness Center offer Suitcase Fitness class on April 17 This popular class includes an introduction to lightweight exercise equipment that can fit easily into even the smallest of carry-on luggage, and ideas for "sneaking" exercise into a busy travel schedule. Energizing and tasty food suggestions for travel also included. Fee: $18 (check payable to the Wellness Center) covers the cost of Xertube and Xercise Band travel kit. The class is from noon to 12:45 p.m. on Wednesday, April 17, at the Wellness Center, Room 106. Health promotion classes are open to the entire Laboratory work force. Updated 04/11/02 Sports Car Club del Valle Rio Grande conducting driving school on April 27 The Sports Car Club del Valle Rio Grande will be conducting a novice autocross driving school on April 27 at the New Mexico State Police Academy driving facility in Santa Fe. This school is intended for drivers with no more than two years of autocross experience, and is also recommended for anyone interested in improving their driving skills but who might not be interested in competition. Topics to be covered include finding the handling limits of a car, basic car control techniques and discussion of ways to improve the handling of a car. Instruction will be primarily in-car, along with various discussions and demonstrations. Our instructors have a huge amount of experience both in competition and in driving instruction. Updated 04/11/02 Volunteers needed for horseback riding program CNM North Mesa Riders is looking for volunteers age 15 and up to help with the horseback-riding program for people with disabilities. The riding program will begin on May 14 at the North Mesa stables and run through September. No previous horse experience is necessary to volunteer. *Volunteers are needed for Tuesday evenings from 4:30 to 5:45 p.m. and 5:30 to 6:45 p.m., Wednesdays from 1 to 3 and 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. and on Saturday mornings from 9:30 to 11 a.m. New volunteers are encouraged to attend one of two orientation and safety information sessions from 7 to 8 p.m. scheduled on April 24 and April 30 at the United Church on Canyon Road, Graves Hall. The public is welcome to attend these sessions. The training program will provide information on how to safely lead horses, support riders and provide safe riding activities. Volunteers who attend one of these sessions and complete the necessary paperwork will be invited to participate in a hands-on training session from 10 to 11:30 a.m. at the stable on Saturday, May 4. CNM North Mesa Riders provides equine-oriented activities, in conformance with guidelines established by the North American Riding for the Handicapped Association (NARHA), to make a positive contribution to Los Alamos County and Northern New Mexico community members who face physical, emotional and mental challenges. Our program also strives to provide our students, volunteers and community with a better understanding and appreciation of how horse and all animals contribute to the well being of people. Updated 04/11/02 2002 Annual Technical Meeting of the Southwest Regional Chapter of the INMM on May 16 The Second Annual Technical Meeting of the Southwest Regional Chapter of the Institute of Nuclear Materials Management will take place on May 16 at the Kachina Lodge in Taos. The meeting will start at 9 a.m. and continue until 5 p.m. The meeting will consist of technical presentations and discussions on current topics. The topics range from discussions of international policy to "How good is good enough?" For those wishing to socialize at an unhosted post meeting dinner, a group reservation will be made at a nearby restaurant. Rooms at the Kachina Lodge are available for those wishing to stay overnight in Taos. Room rates are $59 for a single and $69 for a double, the rate is available until May 10. Since the current design has been around for several years, it's time for a new design. What better way to redesign our logo than to have Laboratory employees and contractors submit their designs. Updated 03/27/02 County fair and rodeo queen, court competition now underway Girls and women between the ages of 14 and 23 are being sought to compete for the Los Alamos County Fair and Rodeo queen and court. The deadline to sign up as a candidate is May 10, with the queen and court competition scheduled for May 18 at Brewer Arena. The Los Alamos County Fair and Rodeo is a Laboratory sanctioned event. Winners will participate in the Red River Rodeo and the Santa Fe Rodeo, in addition to reigning over the Los Alamos County Festival, Fair and Rodeo in August. Criteria for selecting the rodeo queen includes horsemanship (60 percent of the decision) and personality (40 percent). Contestants make a formal speech before a panel of judges, and compete in horsemanship contests. In September, rodeo queens from around the state compete for the title of State Rodeo Queen at the State Fair in Albuquerque. The statewide winner receives another crown and buckle, in addition to a saddle and $1,000. The 2002 Los Alamos Dog Jog, a Laboratory sanctioned event, is set for the morning of Saturday, April 27, at Chamisa School in White Rock. Coordinated as a fundraiser for the Friends of the Shelter, this 5K run/walk is open to all ages and families (with or without canine), and all dogs on leashes with current license and vaccinations. An optional 2-mile course is also available. You don't have a dog, you say? Not to worry. Friendly shelter dogs will be available for hire on race day (on a first come, first served basis) as your guest around the course for a nominal donation. The $15 Early Bird registration ends Friday, April 2, so sign up now. Family discounts are also available. Updated 03/01/02 Los Alamos YMCA registering youths for two summer programs The Los Alamos Family YMCA, a Laboratory sanctioned organization, is registering youths for its Earth Service Corps and Counselor in Training summer programs. The Earth Services Corps combines volunteer service, environmental education and work experience in a program that focuses on trail improvement, landscaping and watershed restoration. The supervised program runs from June 4 to Aug. 9 and is for youths 11 to 15 years of age. The Counselor in Training supervised program incorporates counselor training and volunteer work at the YMCA Day Camp. This program runs from June 4 to Aug. 21 and is for youths 12 to 15 years of age. The registration fee is $100 for YMCA members, $125 for nonmembers. Early registration is encouraged; class sizes are limited. Updated 03/01/02 Employees leaving Lab must attend termination presentation Employees who are leaving the Laboratory or changing to casual status must attend a benefits termination presentation held by Compensation and Benefits (HR-1). The termination presentations are held every Laboratory pay day for University of California Lab employees. Employees who are retiring aren't required to attend a presentation, but rather, they should schedule a meeting with their designated benefits specialist. The presentations begin at 8:30 a.m. in room P280 on the second floor of the Otowi Building at Technical Area 3. Pre-registration is required. Employees should register on line at http://www.lanl.gov/internal/training/training.html one to two weeks prior to their last scheduled work day to sign up for a benefits termination presentation. Employees also must obtain a termination checklist from HR-Staffing (HR-5) before the presentation. At the presentation, employees will receive a packet of information about their benefits and savings balances. They will learn about options to continue or convert insurance plans and distribution options for savings funds. Employees who require a sign language interpreter should write to benefits@lanl.gov by e-mail three days in advance of the presentation they plan to attend. Or call the benefits office at 5-3842 (TDD). Because of limited parking, employees should plan to arrive early and/or make alternative transportation arrangements, such as using Johnson Controls Northern New Mexico's ride service.
