April Personal Best now available onlineThe April edition of Personal Best, the health and wellness newsletter, is now available online. This month's cover story, "Walk away the Blues," emphasizes the psychological benefits of exercise. Looking after physical health and maintaining regular exercise also is important during times of grief. Readers will find practical measures for "Easing Heartache" in this month's issue. "First Aid FAQs" is this month's special report. In addition to answering many commonly asked questions, the article gives advice on proper preparation for an emergency and lists several situations, which would require calling 9-1-1 or a trip to the emergency room. Laboratory workers are reminded of two benefits that may be helpful when there is a question about seeking medical care: Health Connection, a 24-hour nurse hotline that provides direct access to the nurses at the Mayo Clinic who can answer health questions on various topics; and the self-care guide "Take Care of Yourself," which was distributed to Laboratory workers a few years ago and can answer questions regarding what level of medical care may be appropriate. Diabetics are at increased risk for developing cardiovascular disease. Find out about the National Diabetes Education Program's public campaign to raise awareness about this issue in the article "Diabetic ABCs." It features three screening tests every diabetic should have done. "Best Food Buys for Better Health" is the nutrition article for April. Readers will find tips for making healthy selections in grocery store aisles. The article also lists suggested items to stock in the pantry and fridge. Many of these foods can be used to make this month's recipe, Quick'n' Easy Clam Linguini. Also in this issue: cancer warning signs, smart steps to financial security, the hazards of chewing tobacco, self-care for aging skin, Parkinson's disease update, Spring-time personal health and safety checklist, heartburn quiz and the benefits of weight training beyond increased muscle mass. Personal Best is provided for Laboratory personnel by the Positive Health Directions program, part of Occupational Medicine (HSR-2) and Compensation and Benefits (HR-1). The hardcopy Body Bulletin, Safety Check Solutions and the online Personal Best are published by Scott Publishing in Edmonds, Wash.
