Work Wear New Mexico in Los Alamos on April 8 and 12

Monday, April 08, 2002

Crystal Rodarte, right, of Utilities and Infrastructure (FWO-UI), and Albert Serrano of Johnson Controls Northern New Mexico, hang the first of several banners that will be displayed around the Lab and townsite announcing the fourth annual wildland fire public meeting scheduled for April 17 in Fuller Lodge downtown. Sponsored by the Interagency Wildfire Management Team, "Wildfire 2002" will focus on current wildfire conditions, interagency mitigation efforts, and how the public can help protect both home and community. Scheduled speakers are from the Los Alamos Fire Department, Santa Fe National Forest, Bandelier National Monument, the U.S. Geological Survey, the U.S. Forest Service and the Laboratory. Preparing for Wildfire 2002

"Severe drought conditions are turning this into one of the earliest and worst fire seasons in recent history," said Diana Webb of Ecology (ESH-20). "The Lab and the IWMT want to remind everyone to exercise special caution at home, work or when enjoying outdoor activities," Webb said.

Laboratory fire restrictions went into effect on March 5 in an alert issued by the Lab's Fire Protection Office. Link here to Lab restrictions at http://labreq.lanl.gov/pdfs/ops/01_operations/alert0001.pdf online (Adobe Acrobat required).

The Santa Fe National Forest recently issued fire restrictions (see sidebar story).

Fire restrictions in effect in Santa Fe National Forest

Santa Fe National Forest has imposed these fire restrictions on national forest system lands, including the Valles Caldera National Preserve:

Open Campfire Restrictions:
Campfires, charcoal grills and stove fires are prohibited on national forest lands without a permit, except in Forest Service developed camp and picnic grounds where grills are provided. Pressurized liquid or gas stoves, lanterns and heaters meeting safety specifications are allowed.

Smoking Restrictions:
Smoking is allowed within an enclosed vehicle or building; a developed recreation site; or while stopped in an area at least 3 feet in diameter and free of all flammable material.

Fireworks:
As always, fireworks are prohibited on all national forest lands.

The restrictions went into effect on March 29. Violations of these prohibitions are punishable by a fine of not more than $5,000 for an individual and $10,000 for a group/organization, or imprisonment for not more than six months or both.

For more information, call the Santa Fe National Forest at 438-7840 or go to www.fs.fed.us/r3/fire online.
