Laboratory celebrates American Indian Heritage Month in April

Lab's tribal relations efforts described in talk today

Three presentations are scheduled at the Laboratory in April as part of American Indian Heritage Month.

The first event is at 11:30 a.m. today in the J. Robert Oppenheimer Study Center at Technical Area 3. Joe Garcia, the Lab's tribal relations team leader in the Community Relations (CRO) Office will speak on Los Alamos' tribal relations efforts.

The theme of this year's American Indian Heritage Month is "Diversity Within American Indian Tribes: Views On Culture, Education, Government and Business." At 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, Tex Hall, president of the National Congress of American Indians, will speak on "Diversity and Unity In Indian Country." His talk is in the University of New Mexico, Los Alamos Lecture Hall in Building 2.

And at 11:30 a.m., April 24 in the Peace Pipe Room of the Los Alamos Inn, a panel discussion, "Diversity within local Southwestern American Indian Tribes," will focus on unique tribal culture and its interaction with modern life.

Panelists include Laboratory retiree, Gilbert Suazo, a Taos pueblo member and former lieutenant governor, Lorene Willis, director of the Jicarilla Apache Nation Culture Center, Robert Johnson a Navajo cultural specialist and Jeronima G. Ortiz of the San Juan Pueblo Indian Education support staff.
