Biennial Radiation Protection and Shielding Division Topical Meeting April 14 through 18 The 12th Biennial Radiation Protection and Shielding Division Topical Meeting of the American Nuclear Society will be held in Santa Fe from April 14 to 18. The meeting is sponsored by the ANS Trinity Section and cosponsored by the Health Physics Society, L'Organisation de coopération et de développement/L'Agence pour l'énergie nucléaire and the Radiation Shielding Information Computational Center. In addition to an exciting technical program, workshops, tours (technical and social) and student programs are planned. Updated 04/2/02 German Study Group begins new session The German Study Group will be starting a new session for beginners on April 22, meeting in the TA-3 area from 11:45 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. Updated 04/2/02 Workshop on knowledge, data mining, information processing April 9 at Lab The Laboratory's Threat Reduction Directorate is hosting a workshop from 8 a.m. to noon April 9 on data mining, information processing, knowledge management and decision support. The workshop is in the Materials Science and Technology Building large conference room at Technical Area 3. The workshop will focus on programs at the Lab that can be utilized to assist other government agencies and the country in responding to threats of terrorist attacks, with the goal being to develop a focal point at the Lab for agencies requesting the Lab's assistance in this area. are held at the Benefits Office. Updated 03/29/02 Veteran's Committee T-shirt logo contest Each year at the annual Veteran's Day Fun Run the committee hamds out T-shirts to the participants. Since the current design has been around for several years, it's time for a new design. What better way to redesign our logo than to have Laboratory employees and contractors submit their designs. Updated 03/27/02 County fair and rodeo queen, court competition now underway Girls and women between the ages of 14 and 23 are being sought to compete for the Los Alamos County Fair and Rodeo queen and court. The deadline to sign up as a candidate is May 10, with the queen and court competition scheduled for May 18 at Brewer Arena. The Los Alamos County Fair and Rodeo is a Laboratory sanctioned event. Winners will participate in the Red River Rodeo and the Santa Fe Rodeo, in addition to reigning over the Los Alamos County Festival, Fair and Rodeo in August. Criteria for selecting the rodeo queen includes horsemanship (60 percent of the decision) and personality (40 percent). Contestants make a formal speech before a panel of judges, and compete in horsemanship contests. In September, rodeo queens from around the state compete for the title of State Rodeo Queen at the State Fair in Albuquerque. The statewide winner receives another crown and buckle, in addition to a saddle and $1,000. Updated 03/27/02 Preparation course offered for American Board of Health Physics Part 2 Examination An American Board of Health Physics Part 2 Exam (ABHP part 2) preparation course to be offered at the Laboratory, depending upon interest, May 20 through 24 tentatively. Following is the course description: A five-day, examination-based course designed to prepare the qualified candidate to pass Part II of the American Board of Health Physics (ABHP) certification examination. The course combines Instructional Systems Design (ISD) methodology with actual Part II examination questions to impart upon and refresh the candidate with those health physics principles tested by the ABHP on the examination. The course content is based upon the Domains and Sub-Areas established by the ABHP in 1987. Past and emulated Part II questions have been grouped according to each Fundamental and Specialty area identified in the ABHP's Examination Preparation Guide. Each area is covered in an Overview Lecture and Examination Workshop, and the course culminates in a mock Part II examination covering all of the areas. The AAHP awards course attendees 32 CECs towards maintenance of the CHP

The 2002 Los Alamos Dog Jog, a Laboratory sanctioned event, is set for the morning of Saturday, April 27, at Chamisa School in White Rock. Coordinated as a fundraiser for the Friends of the Shelter, this 5K run/walk is open to all ages and families (with or without canine), and all dogs on leashes with current license and vaccinations. An optional 2-mile course is also available. You don't have a dog, you say? Not to worry. Friendly shelter dogs will be available for hire on race day (on a first come, first served basis) as your guest around the course for a nominal donation. Updated 03/01/02 Los Alamos YMCA registering youths for two summer programs The Los Alamos Family YMCA, a Laboratory sanctioned organization, is registering youths for its Earth Service Corps and Counselor in Training summer programs. The Earth Services Corps combines volunteer service, environmental education and work experience in a program that focuses on trail improvement, landscaping and watershed restoration. The supervised program runs from June 4 to Aug. 9 and is for youths 11 to 15 years of age. The Counselor in Training supervised program incorporates counselor training and volunteer work at the YMCA Day Camp. This program runs from June 4 to Aug. 21 and is for youths 12 to 15 years of age. The registration fee is $100 for YMCA members, $125 for nonmembers. Early registration is encouraged; class sizes are limited. Updated 03/01/02 Employees leaving Lab must attend termination presentation Employees who are leaving the Laboratory or changing to casual status must attend a benefits termination presentation held by Compensation and Benefits (HR-1). The termination presentations are held every Laboratory pay day for University of California Lab employees. Employees who are retiring aren't required to attend a presentation, but rather, they should schedule a meeting with their designated benefits specialist. The presentations begin at 8:30 a.m. in room P280 on the second floor of the Otowi Building at Technical Area 3. Pre-registration is required. Employees should register on line at http://www.lanl.gov/internal/training/training.html one to two weeks prior to their last scheduled work day to sign up for a benefits termination presentation. Employees also must obtain a termination checklist from HR-Staffing (HR-5) before the presentation. At the presentation, employees will receive a packet of information about their benefits and savings balances. They will learn about options to continue or convert insurance plans and distribution options for savings funds. Employees who require a sign language interpreter should write to benefits@lanl.gov by e-mail three days in advance of the presentation they plan to attend.
