Cost of generic Prozac drops could affect Lab employees

The cost for the generic equivalent of the drug Prozac has dropped significantly, which could affect Laboratory employees.

Blue Cross Blue Shield New Mexico, the Laboratory's health care provider, said that the cost for generic Prozac dropped from $2.49 a pill to 70 cents a pill. This will create an increase in what Blue Cross Blue Shield members pay for brand-name Prozac, according to the formula for calculating member costs if the member or doctor requests a brand-name drug when a generic is available.

Blue Cross Blue Shield New Mexico members using the brand-name Prozac pay $15 plus the difference in cost between the brand-name drug and its generic equivalent. The decrease in cost for the generic drug, without an equivalent drop in the price of the name brand, increases the difference in cost between the two. The Human Resources (HR) Division reminds employees they will pay a higher cost for filling a prescription for brand-name Prozac.
