Kirtland AFB base colonel talks at Laboratory about military experiences

Col. Regina Aune of Kirtland Air Force Base spoke about Operation Babylift on Monday in the J. Robert Oppenheimer Study Center as part of the Laboratory's observance of Women's History Month. The presentation was sponsored by the Women's Diversity Working Group and the Diversity (DVO) Office. Operation Babylift centered around the April 4, 1975 airlifts of civilians, including a number of orphans, out of Saigon. The plane crashed about 20 minutes after takeoff; Aune was injured in the crash. Aune was a lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force at the time. Later that year she received a Cheney Award for performing an act of valor for her efforts. Aune is now a commander of the 377th Medical Group at Kirtland Air Force Base in Albuquerque. She has served in the Air Force since 1973. Aune and a contingent of officers from KAFB later toured several Laboratory facilities. For more information, see Monday's Daily Newsbulletin.
