Second annual Science Day set for April 17

The Laboratory's second annual "Science Day" is scheduled for April 17 in the J. Robert Oppenheimer Study Center at Technical Area 3. This year's theme is "making the world a safer place," which captures the essence of the Laboratory's vision, according to Allen Hartford, director of the Science and Technology Base Programs (STB) Office.

General John Gordon, administrator of the National Nuclear Security Administration originally conceived Science Day as an opportunity for NNSA laboratories to highlight recent science and engineering accomplishments.

Science Day includes presentations by Laboratory researchers, poster sessions and tours of the proton radiography facility at TA-53. Science Day is open to all Laboratory workers. Below is a listing of the speakers and their research topics:

  • Nanoenergetics: Metastable Intermolecular Composites, Steven Son, High Explosives Science, (DX-2)
  • Integrated Multilevel Physics Simulation in X-Ray Radiography, Thomas Kwan, Plasma Physics, (X-1)
  • Weapons Radiochemical Analyses - A specialized Form of Nucleosynthesis, Anna Hayes, Nuclear Physics, (T-16)
  • Superconducting Quantum Interference Devices (SQUIDs) for Biological and Nonbiological Applications, Michelle Espy, Biophysics, (P-21)
  • Spectroscopic Characterization of Uranium in the Environment: From Enhanced Remediation to Nuclear Nonproliferation, David Morris, Actinide, Catalysis, Separations Chemistry, (C-SIC)
  • Adaptive Automated Analysis of Images and Signals, Steven Brumby, Space and Remote Sensing Sciences, (NIS-2)
  • Anthrax Gene Expression: One Piece of the Puzzle, James Pannucci, Bioscience Division, (B)
  • Applications of Acoustics, Dipen Sinha, Electronic and Electrochemical Materials and Devices, (MST-11).

Presentations are scheduled from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the Jemez and Cochiti rooms of the Study Center. The presentations will be simulcast on Labnet at both the Administration Building Auditorium and the Physics Building Auditorium at TA-3. Poster sessions will begin at 1:15 p.m. in the Santa Clara Gallery of the Study Center.
