Help Your Teen Make Healthy Choices. A panel discussion and community

(Family Council), Chief Melton (LAPD). Our meetings are open to the public.
This program will be available on videotape courtesy of a grant from Community
Bank. "A Family Guide to 2nd Step." Designed for parents with children
in grades 1-5 who have children actively participating in this program
through the Los Alamos schools, YMCA After school program or Youth Activity
Center. The program will help parents reinforce the skills taught in the
program. Skills learned will include impulse control, anger management
and empathy. Dinner and childcare will be served. Call FSN to register. Strengthening Step-Families. The potential rewards-and challenges-of
step-parenting will be the focus of a series of five group sessions. Group
participants will learn communication and listening skills, processes
for resolving conflicts and making decisions, a way to structure family

Updated 03/22/02 Family YMCA backpacking trip to Gila Wilderness The Los Alamos Family YMCA, a Laboratory sanctioned organization, is signing up youths age 15 and over and adults for a spring backpacking trip to the Gila Wilderness in southern New Mexico. The trip is scheduled for April 1-5. Participants will take a 10 1/2-mile loop through upland and canyon ecosystems of the Gila. Additional day hikes are planned. The last day to sign up for the trip is March 28 and the cost is $129 for members, $157 for nonmembers. Note: youths from age 10-14 also can participate with a guardian. The 2002 Los Alamos Dog Jog, a Laboratory sanctioned event, is set for the morning of Saturday, April 27, at Chamisa School in White Rock. Coordinated as a fundraiser for the Friends of the Shelter, this 5K run/walk is open to all ages and families (with or without canine), and all dogs on leashes with current license and vaccinations. An optional 2-mile course is also available. You don't have a dog, you say? Not to worry. Friendly shelter dogs will be available for hire on race day (on a first come, first served basis) as your guest around the course for a nominal donation. Updated 03/01/02 Los Alamos YMCA registering youths for two summer programs The Los Alamos Family YMCA, a Laboratory sanctioned organization, is registering youths for its Earth Service Corps and Counselor in Training summer programs. The Earth Services Corps combines volunteer service, environmental education and work experience in a program that focuses on trail improvement, landscaping and watershed restoration. The supervised program runs from June 4 to Aug. 9 and is for youths 11 to 15 years of age. The Counselor in Training supervised program incorporates counselor training and volunteer work at the YMCA Day Camp. This program runs from June 4 to Aug. 21 and is for youths 12 to 15 years of age. The registration fee is $100 for YMCA members, $125 for nonmembers. Early registration is encouraged; class sizes are limited. Updated 03/01/02 Class offers tips for successful interviewing “Skilshare“ Behavior Interviewing Training for Employees,”
a free, half-day class for Laboratory workers who want to improve their
interviewing skills, is being taught March 26. In the Training and Development
(HR-6) in-house Management Institute, managers learn how to prepare for
and conduct behavior-based interviews. Now employees will learn how to
prepare for this new interview format. Participants will learn from professional
trainer Dani Fake how to assess and communicate their skills in a positive,
organized manner and how to develop skill-based career goals. The training
includes interactive participant exercises, video reviews and class discussion.
Potential students include both workers anticipating job interviews and people who want to learn how to coach applicants in effective interviewing skills. Updated 02/21/02 Exploring Management workshop on March 27 The Exploring Management workshop is a half-day workshop designed to help Laboratory employees better understand the management function and make a more informed choice to pursue--or not pursue--management as a career option. The focus of the workshop is on understanding what management at the Lab entails. The workshop includes exercises and discussion on the capabilities needed by good managers, the range of tasks a manager is expected to perform and the resources and information managers should be aware of to perform their jobs well. You will also be provided with self-assessments to help you determine strengths and weaknesses in potential management capabilities and develop a plan to build management capabilities to support career growth. If you are considering management as a possible career path or if you are currently in a supervisory position and not sure it is right for you this workshop may benefit you. The workshop is from 8 a.m. to noon on Wednesday, March 27, at Canyon School, Room 160. The workshop is free. Register through the Virtual Training Center or call Sue at 7-8036. Updated 2/12/02 Employees leaving Lab must attend termination presentation Employees who are leaving the Laboratory or changing to casual status must attend a benefits termination presentation held by Compensation and Benefits (HR-1). The termination presentations are held every Laboratory pay day for University of California Lab employees. Employees who are retiring aren't required to attend a presentation, but rather, they should schedule a meeting with their designated benefits specialist. The presentations begin at 8:30 a.m. in room P280 on the second floor of the Otowi Building at Technical Area 3. Pre-registration is required. Employees should register on line at http://www.lanl.gov/internal/training/training.html one to two weeks prior to their last scheduled work day to sign up for a benefits termination presentation. Employees also must obtain a termination checklist from HR-Staffing (HR-5) before the presentation. At the presentation, employees will receive a packet of information about their benefits and savings balances. They will learn about options to continue or convert insurance plans and distribution options for savings funds. Employees who require a sign language interpreter should write to benefits@lanl.gov by e-mail three days in advance of the presentation they plan to attend.
