Los Alamos News Letter

The latest Los Alamos News Letter is scheduled to arrive at newsstands and mailboxes today. "The Lab is in excellent condition" is the front page story recounting Laboratory Director John Browne’s state of the Lab address. Also making front-page news is the approval of the proposed BSL-3 lab. The National Nuclear Security Administration Office of Los Alamos Site Operations issued a "Finding of No Significant Impact" on a proposal to construct and operate a biological safety level 3 laboratory at Los Alamos.

Inside this issue, readers will find an editorial on homeland defense that centers on the Lab visit of Tom Ridge, assistant to the president for homeland security; an article on the realignment of the NNSA; and one celebrating Nuclear Materials Technology (NMT) Division’s safety success. Also in this issue are March service anniversaries and a story on tracking wildlife with Global Positioning System devices.

Internal Security wants to raise awareness of an online scam aimed at tax filers, and Lab scientist Bob Benjamin piques imaginations with a book on such concepts as density, pressure and surface tension aimed at junior-high-aged students. Benjamin said that "Kids are so familiar with water that many of these experiments seem like water play to them. It’s simple, yet I think that it motivates them to see the scientific principles behind these familiar phenomena."

Employees can access L.A.N.L. on the Web http://www.lanl.gov/worldview/news/lanl_archive.shtml or obtain additional copies at the bright blue distribution boxes. Lab organizations receiving too many or not enough should call the mailroom at 7-4166.
