Talk on Friday focuses on trends in atmospheric carbon dioxide concentrationsA Harvard professor of atmospheric and environmental science will discuss factors that lead to changes in atmospheric carbon dioxide concentrations during a talk Friday at the Laboratory. Steven C. Wofsy of Harvard University will present "Understanding the Short-Term and Long-Term Trends in the Concentrations of Atmospheric CO2" at 1 p.m. Friday in the Physics Building Auditorium at Technical Area 3. The colloquium, which is open to all badgeholders, is part of the Frontiers in Geoscience Colloquium series sponsored by the Earth and Environmental Sciences (EES) Division. Refreshments will be served. In his talk, Wofsy will discuss how carbon dioxide concentrations in the atmosphere have increased over the last two decades in comparison to fossil fuel emissions, and how atmospheric CO2 concentrations appear to be moderated through uptake by the land biosphere. Wofsy also will address experimental results and analyses that address what carbon-dioxide-concentration trends may be in the future. Wofsy is the author of a number of recent papers on atmospheric and environmental science topics and is a recipient of several prestigious awards and medals, including the American Geophysical Union's McIlwane Award and NASA's Distinguished Public Service Medal. For more information about the talk, contact Manvendra Dubey of Hydrology, Geochemistry and Geology (EES-6) at 5-3128. --James E.
