Former Navy fighter pilot to speak at Lab, museumMissy Cummings, one of the Navy's first female fighter pilots, will give two talks on Wednesday about her military experiences. Cummings will talk about her transformation from a small town southern belle to a fighter pilot. She also will talk about her role as an aviation pioneer, breaking down barriers and gender stereotyping, especially in engineering fields. Sponsored by Los Alamos Women's Diversity Working Group as part of womens history month at the Lab, Cummings will speak to Lab workers at 10 a.m. in the Physics Building Auditorium at Technical Area 3. The talk is open to all Lab personnel. Her second presentation will be at 7 p.m. in the Bradbury Science Museum downtown. This talk is free and open to the public. The doors will open at 6:30 p.m. and seating is limited. The museum is located at 15th and Central Avenue in Los Alamos. Earlier in the day, Cummings will speak at the Expanding Your Horizons conference, a program designed to encourage and motivate young women to pursue careers in math and science. Cummings will discuss the importance of conquering fears and use her personal experiences to help inspire and motivate young women to achieve their full potential. Cummings is an adjunct professor of engineering at Virginia Tech and the author of Hornets Nest: The Experience of One of the Navys First Female Fighter Pilots.
