The two-day Technology Expo 2002 will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. March 11 and 15 in the Otowi Building third floor conference room. Patty Nagle, author of southwest Civil War fiction, will speak at noon Thursday at Mesa Public Library downtown. Mesa Public Library is a Laboratory sanctioned organization. Nagle, a Los Alamos native, authored a Far Western Civil War series of novels including "Glorieta Pass," "The Guns of Valverde" and the forthcoming "Galveston." Nagle's work has appeared in the Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction and in several anthologies. Her short story "Coyote Ugly," was honored as a finalist for the Theodore Sturgeon Award. The Earth Services Corps combines volunteer service, environmental education and work experience in a program that focuses on trail improvement, landscaping and watershed restoration. The supervised program runs from June 4 to Aug. 9 and is for youths 11 to 15 years of age. The Counselor in Training supervised program incorporates counselor training and volunteer work at the YMCA Day Camp. This program runs from June 4 to Aug. 21 and is for youths 12 to 15 years of age. The registration fee is $100 for YMCA members, $125 for nonmembers. Early registration is encouraged; class sizes are limited. a free, half-day class for Laboratory workers who want to improve their
interviewing skills, is being taught March 26. In the Training and Development
(HR-6) in-house Management Institute, managers learn how to prepare for
and conduct behavior-based interviews. Now employees will learn how to
prepare for this new interview format. Participants will learn from professional
trainer Dani Fake how to assess and communicate their skills in a positive,
organized manner and how to develop skill-based career goals. The training
includes interactive participant exercises, video reviews and class discussion.
Potential students include both workers anticipating job interviews and people who want to learn how to coach applicants in effective interviewing skills. Updated 02/27/02 Johnson Controls partnering to raise money for Big Brothers Big Sisters Johnson Controls Northern New Mexico, the Laboratory’s largest subcontract company, and Santa Clara Big Rock Bowl are partnering with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northern New Mexico to sponsor the Española Bowl for Kids’ Sake on St. Patrick’s Day, Sunday, March 17. The event is at Big Rock Bowl on Riverside Drive in Española. JCNNM and Big Brothers Big Sisters are seeking lane sponsors ($150, $300, $500, or $1,000) and bowling teams to raise money for Big Brothers Big Sisters. Big Brothers Big Sisters has opened a new office in Española; all the money raised in Española and Los Alamos will be used to sponsor kids in those communities. Updated 02/21/02 Exploring Management workshop on March 27 The Exploring Management workshop is a half-day workshop designed to help Laboratory employees better understand the management function and make a more informed choice to pursue--or not pursue--management as a career option. The focus of the workshop is on understanding what management at the Lab entails. The workshop includes exercises and discussion on the capabilities needed by good managers, the range of tasks a manager is expected to perform and the resources and information managers should be aware of to perform their jobs well. You will also be provided with self-assessments to help you determine strengths and weaknesses in potential management capabilities and develop a plan to build management capabilities to support career growth. If you are considering management as a possible career path or if you are currently in a supervisory position and not sure it is right for you this workshop may benefit you. The Los Alamos Family YMCA, a Laboratory sanctioned organization, is now registering boys and girls ages 4 and 5 for its Kinderkick soccer program. The season begins March 25 and ends May 10 and the cost is $25 for YMCA members, $35 for nonmembers. Practices are held twice a week at 5:30 p.m. in Los Alamos and White Rock. Employees leaving Lab must attend termination presentation Employees who are leaving the Laboratory or changing to casual status must attend a benefits termination presentation held by Compensation and Benefits (HR-1). The termination presentations are held every Laboratory pay day for University of California Lab employees. Employees who are retiring aren't required to attend a presentation, but rather, they should schedule a meeting with their designated benefits specialist. The presentations begin at 8:30 a.m. in room P280 on the second floor of the Otowi Building at Technical Area 3. Pre-registration is required. Employees should register on line at http://www.lanl.gov/internal/training/training.html one to two weeks prior to their last scheduled work day to sign up for a benefits termination presentation. Employees also must obtain a termination checklist from HR-Staffing (HR-5) before the presentation. At the presentation, employees will receive a packet of information about their benefits and savings balances. They will learn about options to continue or convert insurance plans and distribution options for savings funds. Employees who require a sign language interpreter should write to benefits@lanl.gov by e-mail three days in advance of the presentation they plan to attend. Or call the benefits office at 5-3842 (TDD). Because of limited parking, employees should plan to arrive early and/or make alternative transportation arrangements, such as using Johnson Controls Northern New Mexico's ride service.
