How good are you with numbers?

Some of you already may have seen this poster displayed on a bulletin board or some other place around the Lab. Security Education (FSS-15) began distributing these posters Labwide on Monday as part of a campaign to clarify what the numbers on the top right green section of the relatively new standard badges mean and raise security awareness. In short, "1" denotes uncleared; "2" denotes L-clearance with access up to secret formerly restricted data; and "3" denotes Q-clearance. You can pick up a brochure with additional information on the standard badges at the Badge Office. For more information, contact Mary Lyerly at 7-0077. Back to index

Badge Office gets a face lift

The Laboratory's Badge Office at Technical Area 3 is getting a face lift of sorts. The building is being remodeled to provide the best possible service for customers.

The remodeled Badge Office will allow all badging processes to be completed in one location, said Janice Taylor of Personnel and Information Security (FSS-15) which operates the Badge Office. The remodeling started last month, she said.

The remodeling also will ensure greater privacy for Department of Energy interviews and create new office space for employees who work in the office. The conference room will once again be used for meetings. It was being used as temporary office space.

The Badge Office is open for business, but people who walk into the building immediately will notice a thick plastic sheet hanging from the ceiling separating the construction area from offices where Badge Office employees are temporarily relocated while work is completed.

Offices formerly on the west side of the building are being turned into badging stations where badge photos are taken.

The lobby and other common areas of the Badge Office remain in place, but a separate check-in counter is being built toward the back of the building to process uncleared foreign nationals and cleared official visitors, Taylor said.

Taylor said the offices formerly used to take badge photos will become DOE interview rooms, and the conference room will seat up to 20 people.

Behind the new conference room is an office which handles the uncleared foreign national program. The Badge Office team leader's office is located on the west side of the building near a door that opens to the Administration Building.

Taylor said the bathrooms and kitchen area remain the same. The work should be completed by the end of the month, Taylor said.

The Badge Office telephone number is 7-6901.
