Energy secretary takes additional actions to fight discrimination

Department of Energy Secretary Bill Richardson has announced five additional actions to reinforce the DOE's position on diversity in the workplace and to expand efforts to eliminate discrimination.

"We have made progress addressing concerns of racial profiling but more needs to be done," said Richardson. "Everyone within the Energy Department needs to understand that respect, fairness and equal opportunity are part of everything we do." For more information, see the DOE news release.

Seventh Interlab 2000 conference upcoming at Lab

Sharing and networking among World Wide Web professionals is the primary goal of the seventh Interlab 2000 conference Oct. 31 through Nov. 2 in the Cochiti and Jemez rooms of the J. Robert Oppenheimer Study Center at the Laboratory.

The conference is open to Lab web page developers and designers and other web professionals in the Department of Energy complex. It also is open to similar professionals in the private sector. The cost is $300 and the registration deadline is Friday (Oct. 20).

Lab Deputy Director for Science, Technology and Programs Bill Press is scheduled to make opening remarks and the conference will feature four keynote speakers who will talk about computer security, databases, knowledge management and web design, said Josephine Caffrey of Systems Support (BUS-7).

In developing the conference, Caffrey said, a planning team polled potential participants to develop a list of topics and the four central focus areas.

The three-day conference features live presentations, breakout sessions, laboratory demonstrations, a vendor exhibit and two networking receptions in addition to the four keynote addresses. The complete conference schedule can be found at http://i2k.lanl.gov online. Then click on "agenda/speakers."

Keynote speakers include: Mike Ninness, senior product manager at Adobe Systems, who speaks about web design; Matt Curtin, founder and original hacker at Interhack Corp., and lecturer at Ohio State University, who will speak about research and development of tools, technology and services for privacy and data security; David Phipps, director of Engineering at Quios, who will speak about databases; and Scott Cooper, vide president of Lotus Corp.'s Knowledge Products Management Group, who will speak about knowledge management.

Lab employees design exhibit on display in Española

Several Laboratory employees have put together an exhibit currently on display at the Convento in Española showing the relationship between Los Alamos and its neighbor in the valley.

"Shaping Two Cities: Española and Los Alamos 1925-2000," was hung in the Convento recently as part of the city of Española's 75th anniversary as an incorporated municipality.

Communication Arts and Services (IM-1) designed the display using information provided by Information and Records Management (IM-5).

The display depicts the relationship between the two towns in the 75-year-period. "The purpose of the display is to show just how much Española residents contributed to the war effort then and how we continue to contribute to national interests as scientists and support personnel," said J. Patrick Trujillo of the Nuclear Materials Technology (NMT) Division Office and an Española city councilor.

The display is designed to be viewed from left to right across its 10-foot-wide by 6-foot-high canvas. Images provided by IM-5 range from Santa Cruz Church to Manhattan Era project photos of Los Alamos. It also includes a photo of construction of present day NM 502, a homesteaders cabin on one of the mesas on the Pajarito Plateau, a 1940s photo of the Ford dealership in Española, a circa 1940 Fuller Lodge photograph and the Administration Building prior to construction of the Otowi Building.

"When the U.S. War Department acquired the Pajarito Plateau for the Los Alamos Laboratory in late 1942, many of the miners and factory workers returned home to take jobs with the Manhattan Project," the text accompanying the display reads.

"These early workers from Española contributed significantly to the development of the first atomic bombs, which ended World War II and changed the world forever."

The text continues: "After the war, Española residents continued to play a vital role at Los Alamos, helping the Laboratory become a world-renowned institution. Española residents continue to be a major part of the Los Alamos National Laboratory culture and work force."

The Convento is located in Plaza de Española off Onate Street in Española. The display will hang in the Convento through the end of November.
