Hispanic Heritage Month in full swing

PHOTO: Several hundred Laboratory employees turned out at the Los Alamos Neutron Science Center front lawn area Wednesday to hear Mariachi Vaqueros de la Sierra from New Mexico Highlands University perform. The picnic lunch and performance is part of the Laboratory's celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month. The mariachi group performed several pieces interspersed with information about the origin of the music and about the instruments that make up a mariachi ensemble. At right, Adan Branchal sings solo. Governor's Career Development Conference coordinator at the Lab today

Coordinators of the 20th annual Governor's Career Development Conference will be at the Laboratory today to distribute information about the conference.

A tradition of learning is the theme of the conference Dec. 3 and 4 in the Albuquerque Convention Center dowtown, said Anthony Gonzales of the state Highway and Transportation Department and one of the coordinators of the conference.

Between 11 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. today, there will be a booth in the Otowi Building for Laboratory employees interested in signing up for the conference. The early registration deadline is Oct. 15.

Lab employees who previously contacted conference coordinators also are asked to pick up their conference packets at the booth, said Michelle Sandoval of the state Taxation and Revenue Department.

There is a $25 registration fee payable to the Governor's Career Development Conference, P.O. Box 2082, Santa Fe, NM 87504-2082.

"The Governor's Career Development Conference is open to local, state, federal-government and private-sector employees," said Gonzales. "We encourage Laboratory employees to consider signing up for this very worthwhile conference."

Conference participants can choose from several concurrent workshops dealing with maximizing learning, training tracks, management, customer service, new employee orientation, interpersonal skills and computer skills.

For more information, contact Gonzales at 827-5147, Sandoval at 827-0292 or Angela Maestas, also of the Taxation and Revenue Department, at 827-0321.
